Summary
The rainstorm that washed out the London crowds from their places lining the V-Parade route. Deserted parks and flooded roadways; open air dance "floors" call for improvisation on the part of a few brave spirits. 157 VCs dine at the Dorchester. British and Empire holders of the decoration celebrate in London. The night scene in London when the victory illuminations and firework display floodlit the sky and silhouetted landmarks. The Royal Family saw the spectacle with thousands of celebrators lining the Thames for the pay-out to June 8th. The West End and Eastenders make a night of it. South Coast towns fill up with Whitsun holidaymakers but rain and cold winds turn summer into autumn. Manchester, Southport, Blackpool and Glasgow are visited. V-day in the North is a very sober affair. While London is the cockpit of celebration, Northerners are realistic in their reaction to the victory celebration. There, with no distracting gaiety of V-Day, can best be seen the public sentiment which Chad might say "Wot, nothing to buy".
