- Huge convoy assembled in harbour prior to the invasion of Iwo-Jima. 800 ships and thousands of small landing craft head for the island. American dive bombers take off from carriers to bomb the island prior to the invasion. Anti-aircraft guns on the volcano Surtbachi send up plenty of flak as the bombers go over. On their return to the carriers many make bad landings and one is seen to crash into the sea, the pilot breaking free and swimming around. Battleships put up a terrific barrage to soften up Iwo, three days and nights of thunder and flame preceded the actual landings. Then with time-table precision the landings take place headed by Marines of the 4th and 5th Divisions. Japanese shelling is very heavy and one made a direct hit, killing many Marines. Casualties were heavy during the landings, some 2,000 Marines dying on the shores of Iwo. From a tank the camera catches the advance on Motoyama airfield which will serve American bombers. Flame throwers in action and a Japanese soldier crawling to safety is raked by machine-gun fire and killed. All organised Japanese resistance is now over on Iwo-Jima, the toughest single action of the Pacific War. It cost nearly 20,000 American casualties, over 4,000 of them dead, and 21,000 Japanese killed or captured.
