Career

In 1930 Leslie Landau became the manager of the Shaftesbury Pavilion news theatre, in London’s Shaftesbury Avenue, where he trained a number of staff who went on to manage similar establishments. Landau maintained links with the newsreel editors, who provided him with special material and permitted him to re-edit the standard newsreel releases. In 1934 Gerald Sanger, editor of British Movietone News, praised the programme at the Shaftesbury Pavilion, and acknowledged that ‘its editing, sub-titles and subject matter are all of them exclusive.' This link with the newsreels was indeed very close, for in 1935 Landau was listed as the assistant editor of British Movietone News.
