Career

Terry Gallacher [qv] recalled Peter West as a cameraman ‘hired by Movietone to work exclusively for UPMT [United Press Movietonews Television] alongside Tony Chapman [qv].' Like the newsreels, UPMT worked on 35mm. In October 1963 UPMT was dissolved, but United Press continued to operate its own bureaux and camera crews as UPI [United Press International]. However, UPI worked in close collaboration with Movietone, and Gallacher noted that ‘cameramen Tony Chapman, Peter West and Jim Godfrey [qv] were paid by Movietone and worked for UPI who, under their new regime became known as United Press International Newsfilm (UPIN).' West thus still appears in the Movietone staff list for January 1964, and was also credited for ''RULERS OF THE QUEEN’S NAVY’' in British Movietone News No.1817 of March 1964. West shot occasional 35mm stories for Movietone, but worked largely on 16mm for UPIN. In June 1967, however, United Press split from Movietone and joined ITN, to become UPITN, and West became an ITN cameraman, now shooting exclusively on 16mm.
