    Set up by The James Dyson Foundation, the award operates in 27 countries, and is open to university level students and recent graduates studying product design, industrial design and engineering. It recognises and rewards imaginative design solutions to global problems with the environment in mind. The Awards website includes short videos of this year’s entries and past winners with demonstrations of how the actual product works. Amongst the 2018 winners are: kitchenware for the blind, a prosthetic leg system, furniture for flooding, a semi-automatic Malaria diagnosis device and a wheelchair for air journeys.

    A collection of eight documentaries and 34 short films, all accessible for free via the Why Poverty website. The films address eight difficult questions: How do you change the world; How much inequality is too much; What does an education get you; Is it worse to be born poor than to die poor; How do you feed the world; Are women better at getting out of poverty than men; Do we know what poverty is; How much profit is fair. Why Poverty is an initiative of The Why Foundation, which is a non-profit organisation that produces and distributes factual public media projects to promote independent information on key global issues.     Bertha Foundation is devoted to promoting social justice by supporting collaborations between activists, storytellers and lawyers. It offers four film funds: the Bertha Film Fund, which gives grants for the creation of social impact documentary content; the IDFA Bertha Fund, which supports documentary filmmakers and festivals in developing countries; the Bertha Doc Society Journalism Fund, which is dedicated to supporting long feature documentaries of a journalistic nature, and The Guardian Berth Documentary Partnership which is currently commissioning a series of 12 short documentary films from independent filmmakers. The site also offers trailers of all the Bertha completed films via their Film Directory section.

    The Stavros Niarchos Foundation is an international philanthropic organisation which funds projects in the areas of arts and culture, education, health and sports, and social welfare. Among these projects is The Agora Institute, at Johns Hopkins University, a multidisciplinary centre that aims to serve as a forum for bringing together experts from the fields of political science, sociology, history, neuroscience, psychology, philosophy, and ethics to examine the dynamics of civic discourse and design and test means for improving open dialogue, civic engagement, and democratic governance. The series Dialogues are monthly events/discussion about specific issues and can be watched via the SNFcasts. Themes covered so far include Stereotypes, Eros, Journalism in a time of Crisis and Crisis in Journalism, and Enhancing the Health Sector in Greece.

    DER is a US-based distributor of documentaries whose mission is to promote thought-provoking documentary film and media for learning about the people and cultures of the world. The films can be searched by title, geographical area, or subject. The subject headings are helpfully specific such as Aging, Conflict Resolution, Immigration, Language and Communication. The collection is particularly strong in ethnographic film. Each entry carries a full synopsis, a list of related films where relevant and awards won. A streaming licence service is offered and there are links to film festivals. The company offers sponsorship to filmmakers whose work supports its aims.

A series of videos with industry experts aims to take would-be filmmakers through all the stages of the process and offers a comprehensive introduction to legal matters, finance and budgets, selling and distribution, post-production and exhibition, to name just some of the areas covered. There is information on sales and distribution, festivals, location shooting, cross media strategies, and a comprehensive guide to the various sources of funding available. A series of recordings from events held at Film London’s Microschool is available in podcast form, featuring lectures and talks on location filming, music, screenwriting, casting and working with actors to name but a few. The site also provides news on the latest in the independent film-making sector, an excellent links page and has a Get Inspired section, covering films which have been funded by the Microwave scheme. An essential port of call for all low-budget filmmakers, or anyone considering a career in the industry.
