Launched in 2015 by Birkbeck Institute for Moving Image, the programming of The Essay Film Festival aims to provide a focus for the current global expansion of this type of film, which is understood as a hybrid form that brings together elements of documentary and experimental filmmaking into a highly personal and often politically engaged mode of expression. Some classic exponents of the essay film are Humphrey Jennings, Harun Farocki, Patrick Keiller and Agnes Varda. The Events section of the site contains information and resources about past and present editions of the festival, including video and audio recordings of events, photographs, articles and other documents, which are of special value for anyone who is interested in this engaging mode of filmmaking. The Audio Archives present Interviews, Q&As with prominent film theorists such as Thomas Elsaesser and Peter Wollen, and filmmakers including Pierre Creton, Jocelyn Saab, Joao Moreira Salles and Thom Andersen.

The LFFF is an independent festival set up in 2012, which celebrates feminist films past and present from international women directors.
It aims to support women filmmakers in the male-dominated film industry, to get women’s stories out there, and to inspire feminist discussion and activism. The Archive section offers short clips of many of the films included in the programme of each edition of the festival, which combines feminist classics with a selection of current international titles. For example, award-winning A Place of Rage (Pratibha Parmar, 1991) which is a celebration of African American women and their achievements, featuring interviews with Angela Davis, June Jordan, and Alice Walker; Cycologic, which follows urban planner Amanda Ngabirano’s campaign for a cycling lane in her city, and the plea of other women cyclists who negotiate the restrictions imposed on women by society; Ouaga Girls, which shows a group of young women who are training to be car mechanics in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou.

Launched in 2015, this resource is the largest single source of information on films produced in and about the Caribbean, featuring information on more than 500 films from the English, Dutch, French and Spanish-speaking Caribbean. Entries feature, synopsis, production details, brief credits and cast information and most are accompanied by excerpts or trailers. The focus is on contemporary film, so most of the films are post-2000 but a Classic Films section includes films reflecting the region’s rich cinematic history, from well-known titles like The Harder They Come to less widely recognised examples such as Haïti, le chemin de la liberté, the first Haitian feature film. The database features examples from the Caribbean diaspora, so films set in the UK, such as Babylon also feature.
