Founded in the United States in 1948, the AES is the only professional society devoted exclusively to audio technology. It is an international organisation that serves audio engineers, creative artists, scientists and students worldwide by promoting advances in audio and disseminating new knowledge and research. The site offers a wealth of resources, most of which are available to paying members only. They include: Tutorial presentations from conferences and conventions, Oral Histories, and an E-Library which documents the progression of audio research from 1953 to the present day. The UK section of the AES offers some lectures via their YouTube Channel, and reports and recordings of past meetings, which are organised chronologically and go back to 2008.

This research series, organised by Royal Holloway, University of London, School of Modern Languages, uses different formats – lectures, seminars, round tables, workshops, podcasts – to explore the notion of trauma across a wide chronological range. Podcasts include Dr Cecile Bishop talking on ‘The Truth About Amin: History and Fiction in Filmic Portrayals of Idi Amin’; Helen Vassall on ‘The Day Nina Simone Stopped Singing: Gender, War and Trauma’ and Marina Warner speaking on '"What’s Hercules to Him?" The Kingston Shakespeare Seminar was created to realise Peter Hall’s vision for the Rose Theatre, Kingston-upon-Thames as a world centre for Shakespeare study and performance. KiSS brings leading international Shakespeare scholars to the Rose, which Sir Peter Hall developed to be a ‘teaching theatre’. Seminars and conferences are held in the Gallery at the Rose Theatre, Kingston-upon-Thames and are free and open to the general public. Podcasts are available for each event and these are archived.

This site accompanies a major sixty part series broadcast from October 2014 on Radio 4. A joint collaboration by the BBC and the Open University, the series presents a wide-ranging foray into the history of ideas according to scientists, philosophers, linguists, and religious and political thinkers. The programmes are accompanied by a series of short but cleverly designed animations, voiced by Gillian Anderson and Harry Shearer, each of which presents a snapshot view of a particular philosophical problem or idea. Current themes include the nature of freedom, knowing wrong from right, the origins of the universe, has technology changed us and what makes us human. The Open University also has a page devoted to the series, with links to the animations themselves as well as to other relevant textual and audiovisual resources from Open University academics and researchers.

The pages on this site offer various audio and audiovisual resources relating to research done by the Bat Ecology and Bioacoustics Lab at Bristol University into the ecology, behaviour and conservation biology of bats. On offer (all freely available) are an interactive resource called Biosonar: Seeing with Sound, sounds files (in WAV format) of the Echolocation Calls of British Bats, a series of videos ilustrating bats’ acoustic blindness, and a number of short video sequences showing different kinds of bat behaviour.

This resource from the University of Warwick was created in 2012 to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Dickens. The site features short films, podcasts, and articles as well as a 45 minute documentary. Led by Professor John Mee, the videos and podcasts explore various aspects of the novelist’s work, covering Dickens and crime, Dickens in relation to his philanthropic works, as well as wider aspects of Victorian society. Writer Andrew Davies contributes to the discussion on screen adaptation, talking here with Professor Gary Watt about the cinematic nature of Dickens as well as the challenges he has faced in adapting the works for the screen. Aspects of certain novels, including Bleak House, Great Expectations and Little Dorrit are explored in greater depth in individual podcasts. The discussion on Our Mutual Friend, for example, looks at the destabilising effect of the novel’s dark humour and its presentation of human beings as commodities to be bartered and traded.

A series of videos with industry experts aims to take would-be filmmakers through all the stages of the process and offers a comprehensive introduction to legal matters, finance and budgets, selling and distribution, post-production and exhibition, to name just some of the areas covered. There is information on sales and distribution, festivals, location shooting, cross media strategies, and a comprehensive guide to the various sources of funding available. A series of recordings from events held at Film London’s Microschool is available in podcast form, featuring lectures and talks on location filming, music, screenwriting, casting and working with actors to name but a few.
