This site presents videos of academics from various disciplines, talking to camera about their interests and research. The aim is to communicate research in a way that is accessible to the wider public. The videos are professionally made and the participants present their ideas clearly in an unadorned, simple way, largely relying on direct, to camera communication, without any other audiovisual aids. Users can narrow their search by four broad categories: Arts and Humanities, Formal Sciences, Natural Sciences, Professional and Social Sciences. Amongst the disciplines currently represented on the site are Architecture, History, Philosophy, Sociology, Finance, Fashion, Film Studies, Management and Planetary Sciences. All content is free to view but there are various Licensing options for use of the content beyond the platform. A simple idea, well executed.

Academics from the University of Edinburgh discuss a theme of contemporary relevance in this monthly podcast. The first episode saw professors from the schools of law, economics and history discuss the issues associated with Scottish independence before the 2014 referendum. Other podcasts have more of a magazine format, covering several topics, but the general focus is on current political, economic and social issues, including migration within the EU, the rise of Russian nationalism, and women’s rights, as well as more local issues, such as Scottish oral history and the negative effects of Edinburgh’s self-image. The podcast is also available on iTunes.

The Open Society Archives (OSA) at the Central European University in Budapest, collects, preserves and makes available documents and films relating to recent Eastern European History, particularly relating to Communism, the Cold War and human rights. Founded by George Soros in 1995, the OSA is a campaigning organisation and part of its mission is to develop new ways of contextualising primary resources: hence the wide range of exhibitions, projects and information presented on this stimulating and cleverly designed website. A number of resources, including Themed resource guides will help researchers navigate the wide range of material available, while the OSA TV part of the site presents video recordings of public lectures, events and exhibitions, as well as videos from the archival collections.

In 2009 over 850 cans of film were rescued from a discard pile at a defunct Russian Cultural Centre in Amman, Jordan. Eventually they came to the attention of Matthew Epler, an American who was then teaching in Jordan. This website was created by Epler with the aim of use crowdsourcing to identify and translate the labels on the cans, with a view to eventually digitising the films and creating an online resource for scholars and researchers, as well as recovering the history of what appears to be a culturally significant find.

Epler and his colleagues photographed the label on each can and created an online database of images, with fields for researchers to comment. So far, with the assistance of interested researchers, nearly 600 labels have been translated. The material spans five decades from the 1930s to the 1980s and most of it comes from SovExportFilm, a Soviet film agency. A number of clips have been digitised and can be viewed here. Among the films identified so far are a documentary confirmed to be part of the PLO Film Archive, lost since 1985; footage of King Hussein in 1968 addressing the United Nations in the aftermath of the Six Day War and documentary footage of Jerusalem in 1968 and its aftermath.

The site is currently (Nov. 2014) inactive but some of the footage can still be viewed on the Moving Image Archive News site.

The jewel in the crown of the Austrian Film Museum’s (OeFM) website is its digitised version of fourteen of the original 43 issues of the early Soviet newsreel series Kinonedelja prints of which were acquired by the museum in the 1970s. These newsreels not only provide an provide an invaluable record of life in the fledgling Soviet Russia, then in the throes of civil war, but also comprise the first films of Dziga Vertov - who soon after joining the company took on responsibility for the content and structure of each issue, and - on occasion - directed as well. The newsreels are free to view in their entirety and include full transcripts of the intertitles in German and English.

The Digital Performance Archive (DPA) was an outcome of an Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB) funded research project between Nottingham Trent and Salford Universities to undertake a major collection and analysis of digital performance events and developments that occurred during the 1990s. The project was called “DRIP-DROP”, standing for ‘Digital Resources In Performance – Digital Resources On Performance’, and it documented developments in the creative use of computer technologies in performance - from live theatre and dance productions that incorporated digital media, to cyberspace interactive dramas and web-casts.
The “Drip-Drop” project produced an extensive online searchable database of virtual theatre performance and related events from 1990 to 2000, including selected video documentation, images and statements by creators.

ETV is a specialised film archive holding footage of the twentieth century. The archive specialises in left wing footage from around the world, with a particular emphasis on material from Russia and the Soviet Union. There is no searchable database, only sections from ETV subject catalogues, which do at least point out the range and strengths of the collection. This site is no longer active, but it can be traced by entering the address in the Wayback Machine. The ETV collection is now held by the National Film and Television Archive.
