The idea that the expressive traditions of all local and ethnic cultures should be equally valued was at the heart of musicologist Alan Lomax’s career. His Sound, Photograph and Video collections, which are the legacy of his extensive field research carried out between 1946-1990, can now be accessed online via the Cultural Equity website. Gems include The New Orleans Jazz Interviews (1949), the England and Wales folk songs (1951-1958), blues artist Big Bill Broonzy, Bessie Jones, and Caribbean 1962, just when the British West Indies were on the verge of independence. There are also three YouTube channels: The Alan Lomax Archive, which offers video clips from Lomax’s “American Patchwork” fieldwork (1978-1983), thus far including Mississippi Delta and Hill Country, Appalachia, New Orleans, Cajun Louisiana, Johns Island, SC; The Global Jukebox Channel with 600 recorded language examples collected by Lomax for Parlametrics, his study of speaking style, and the Cultural Equity Channel set up to provide Grenadians at home and in the Diaspora with an interactive online resource for Grenadian folkways and an outlet for cultural feedback.

These webcasts consist of lectures and talks by experts, academics, researchers and archivist. The Library of Congress has many different sites, collections and projects, covering a wide range of subjects: all are well-represented here and have been divided into eight broad subject areas: Biography, History, Performing Arts, Education, Government, Poetry and Literature, Religion and Science & Technology. Users can narrow their searches further within these broad headings, according to project/site/collection eg. The American Folklife Center, the Music Division, the Digital Future and You project, to name but three. The webcasts come with a brief description, date when uploaded and fully searchable transcripts. There is also a section for recently added webcasts. Although the talking head format is slightly old-fashioned the content is good and its searchability makes it a useful and user-friendly resource.

This site - also known as CroMe - presents interviews with Croatian citizens who have experienced violent situations in the time period 1941 - 1995: a timespan covering World War II, the Yugoslavia period and the Balkan conflicts of the 90s. There are hundreds of interviews, ‘with a particular emphasis on women and marginalised ethnic minorities, as well as on victims, particularly former inmates and family members of killed and missing persons’. Users can narow their search by word (in the text summary or subtitle) theme, place, region. The site is available in an English version but most of the videos are, of course, in Croatian. There is, however, a small selection which feature searchable English subtitles.

Subtitled ‘Audiovisual Archive of the Francoist Repression’, this resource is the result of a collaborative project between the University of California at San Diego and various Spanish civic associations and human rights organisations. The core of the site is its collection of audiovisual recordings featuring the testimonies of fighters in, witnesses to, and victims of the Spanish Civil War. The resource is an attempt to counter the long-lasting effects of the so-called ‘Pact of Silence’ and the 1977 Amnesty Law which forbade any legal proceedings against perpetrators of human rights violations during the conflict. This page gives a detailed account of the aims of the project, including an explanation of why oral testimony is so important and the reasoning behind the project’s methodology. Recordings are high quality mp4 format and feature English and Spanish summaries. The majority of the interviews, however, are in Spanish only, without subtitles.
