The New York Public Library produces a range of interesting resources relating to its own services, as well as a number of podcasts about books and culture in general. The Librarian is In is a lively podcast presented by staff of the New York Public Library. Styling itself the ‘podcast about books, culture and what to read next’ each episode does exactly that, adding information about issues affecting librarians and information professionals. Amongst the other other offerings are the Louis Armstrong Jazz Oral History Project and interviews with writers like Michael Chabon, Richard Price, Wole Soyinka, Art Spiegelman and Tom Wolfe.

These webcasts consist of lectures and talks by experts, academics, researchers and archivist. The Library of Congress has many different sites, collections and projects, covering a wide range of subjects: all are well-represented here and have been divided into eight broad subject areas: Biography, History, Performing Arts, Education, Government, Poetry and Literature, Religion and Science & Technology. Users can narrow their searches further within these broad headings, according to project/site/collection eg. The American Folklife Center, the Music Division, the Digital Future and You project, to name but three. The webcasts come with a brief description, date when uploaded and fully searchable transcripts. There is also a section for recently added webcasts. Although the talking head format is slightly old-fashioned the content is good and its searchability makes it a useful and user-friendly resource.

The British Library has held two Unlocking Audio conferences relating to sound digitisation. The first, in 2007, was on Sharing Experience of Mass Digitisation and explored the planning and strategies required for the successful execution of large-scale audio digitisation projects, and the technical and practical issues involved. The second, Connecting with Listeners was held in 2009 and looked at the use of sounds online and ways that researchers and other audiences expect to discover, browse, audition and analyse archival audio resources. This website provides the full conference programmes and audio/video recordings of selected contributions to the debate.

The European Film Gateway is a 3-year project which started on 1st September 2008. It is developing an online portal, providing direct access to about 790,000 digital objects including films, photos, posters, drawings, sound material and text documents. Content will be provided mostly by film archives and cinémathèques, which are partners in the project. The collections to be made accessible have been selected to serve as a sample representing the actual digitised content held in the film institutions. The European Film Gateway will be linked to the Europeanaportal, which is creating the European digital library, museum and archive, providing integrated access to digital treasures from museums, archives, audio-visual archives and libraries of Europe. By making its archival content available through the common interface of Europeana, EFG will contribute to fulfilling one of the major promises of an integrated digital environment: enabling users to search and retrieve different media via a single access point.
