The site offers audio and video podcasts, the majority of which are accompanied by downloadable transcripts. The description of content is good, there is a keyword searching facility, and helpfully the summary gives information on the director/producer/interviewer. Recent topics have included Mercury and Global Change, Geomagnetic Storms and Preparing for Earthquakes.

This Earth Sciences resource was developed by the Open University to broaden access to rock collections previously only available in universities, museums or specialist institutions. The aim is to engage with students at school or in higher education and to help develop identification and classification skills without the need for expensive microscopes or the facilities to prepare thin slices of rock. Users can zoom, pan and rotate specimens in light conditions that mirror those previously only possible using specialist petrological microscopes. The collections include meteorites as well as a news section and a list of teaching resources.

The large quantities of NASA satellite imagery placed here have been broken down into dozens of categories, from such broad areas as Agriculture, Atmosphere and Oceans to narrower items such as individual countries, cities and events like an eruption from Mount Etna for example. Whether they be straightforward stills or infrared images, the quality and resolution of the material (presented as JPEGs and TIFFs) is generally excellent, and all the stills are accompanied with details of their exact provenance and short essays exploring the individual images. The database can be searched using standard Boolean operators. The images are free to use and are considered to be Public Domain by NASA.

Part of the Internet Archive, which also covers archived moving images (The Internet Moving Images Archive), audio and software, the Wayback Machine holds cached versions of thousands of websites and billions of pages, allowing users to look at sites that are no longer available or at earlier versions of ones that are still around. An invaluable resource that, due to the gigantic nature of the holdings, is slightly hampered by the fact that no list of the holdings can be easily provided. This means inevitably that correct recall of the URL in question is necessary, or failing that, searching for it on the web first.
