The CAIN (Conflict Archive on the InterNet) website, located at the University of Ulster, contains information and source material on ‘the Troubles’ and politics in Northern Ireland from 1968 to the present. There is also some material on society in the region and a selection of digitised records from the National Archives of Ireland and the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland. The main sections are: Background to the Conflict; Key Events; Key Issues, Databases and Bibliographies, Northern Ireland Society and Conflict Studies. The films section lists films with ‘the Troubles’ as the theme. There is also video footage of a selection of Physical Memorials in public spaces. The videos contain no commentary and provide enough detail for users to be able to read inscriptions.

Arab Media Watch is a UK-based organisation that feels Arabs have long been misrepresented, under-represented and negatively stereotyped in Western media and film. Britain is no exception. They believe that the advent of the internet and satellite broadcasting provides a unique opportunity to educate and inform public opinion and that AMW has filled a vital niche in striving for objective British coverage of Arab issues, be they political, economic, cultural or social. Main activities include: - monitoring and analysing the British media (there is a BBC Watch group) as well as helping journalists and editors with research, information and interviews, and producing monitoring studies of coverage in newspapers, magazines, TV, radio and websites. The website also gives listings of relevant forthcoming and previously broadcast radio and television programmes.

The Vision of Britain Through Time website, an initiative of the Great Britain Historical GIS (GBH-GIS) based at the University of Portsmouth. gives e-access to over two centuries’ worth of facts, figures, surveys, maps, election results and travel writing showing how 15,000 UK places have changed. It includes new-to-view historic boundary maps, a land use survey that helped to defeat Hitler, unemployment and wage records, farm surveys from 1866, the biggest e-library of historic British travel writing and the results of every Parliamentary election since 1833.Funded by JISC as part of a programme to offer a wider audience free access to academic research and resources.

IMPALA (Informal Mobile Podcasting and Learner Adaptation) is a Higher Education Academy-funded project researching into the use of podcasts in university teaching and learning. It has produced its own series of podcasts offering guidance for staff on how to use this resource. There is also a blog providing up-to-date information on the project. A linked project, IMPALA 2, is investigating the impact of podcasting on student learning in Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences (GEES), and delivers testable and transferable models of using podcasting for learning in these subjects. IMPALA4T investigates the use of ‘student created’ podcasts to support the transition of students into higher education. The project seems to have concluded but the website contains much useful information.

An online database listing the videos and DVDs held in the library of of UCL’s School of Slavonic and East European Studies for use by UCL staff and students. Full listings are given under the headings feature films; animation; documentaries on history, politics and current affairs; documentaries on literature, cinema and other arts; language learning materials. The large quantities of NASA satellite imagery placed here have been broken down into dozens of categories, from such broad areas as Agriculture, Atmosphere and Oceans to narrower items such as individual countries, cities and events like an eruption from Mount Etna for example. Whether they be straightforward stills or infrared images, the quality and resolution of the material (presented as JPEGs and TIFFs) is generally excellent, and all the stills are accompanied with details of their exact provenance and short essays exploring the individual images. The database can be searched using standard Boolean operators. The images are free to use and are considered to be Public Domain by NASA.

American online video store of basic design and limited catalogue information, covering feature films and documentary material such as National Geographic, Nova, science, nature and history, also opera, classical music, dance and literature. The company, also using the name ‘Viewfinders’, specialises in supplying material in video rather than DVD format and the site contains a regularly updated list of the new factory wrapped VHS titles they have remaining in stock. They claim to be able to supply virtually any video/DVD that is in current distribution in the US. In addition the site offers a ‘Radio Program’ of 3-minute audio descriptions of recommended films.
This site is no longer active, but the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine offers a capture of the website as it appeared on 24/08/2005. This does not include access to the moving images.
