Also known as Sci Fri, this popular American science podcast and radio programme has covered all aspects of science since 1991. One of the first US radio science talk shows, the programme has over the years featured such names as Carl Sagan, Jane Goodall, Sylvia Earle and Oliver Sacks and has a reputation for groundbreaking and original science reporting. According to the site, the show’s founder and executive producer Ira Flatow was the first person to use the word ‘podcast’ on the airwaves. Archives go back as far as 2004 but there is also a substantial amount of video content. A section of the attractively laid out website features a range of educational resources, mainly aimed at primary and secondary school level.

This popular American radio programme about science and philosophy is aimed at an audience of general listeners and is characterised by its innovative sound design. Each podcast takes a broad theme, such as Parasites, Placebo or Games and takes an exploratory, associative approach to the subject, aiming to stimulate curiosity rather than reach a definitive conclusion about the chosen topic. Each show is divided into several parts, featuring interviews with experts and occasional ventures into audience participation and ‘thought experiments’. The programme’s host Jad Abumrad is a trained musician and his background as a composer is evident in the podcast’s approach to sound, where music, speech and effects overlap, forming an integral part of the programme’s experimental, freewheeling ethos.

The Bradshaw Foundation is a privately funded non-profit organisation which exists to discover, document and preserve ancient cave and rock art around the world, and promote the study of early humankind’s artistic achievements. The foundation’s online learning resource contains a wealth of material on prehistoric art along with essays, notes, timelines, links, newsletters, links to research papers as well as useful contextual information on paleoanthropology, archaeology and genetic science. The resource is extensively illustrated with myriad stills of paintings, carvings and artefacts from many of the most significant prehistoric sites around the world. There is now a new film archive section which includes a series of interviews with eminent prehistorians and other audiovisual material. The Bradshaw Foundation’s podcast can be found on iTunes and is free. Other notable resources include a section on the significance of abstract geometric signs in cave art and the journey of humankind from its origins in Africa, shown via an interactive map and timeline.
