A joint initiative by INA and the French Ministry for Education, this is an educational resource which uses material from INA’s archives to present a collection of thousands of film and television clips covering 100 years of events, from 1913 - 2012. Each clip is accompanied by a synopsis, credits, a transcript, and essays which look both at the historical context and how the clips themselves depict the events.

Academics from the University of Nottingham’s School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies present a series of short videos based on a single word which is significant to their research. The site’s homepage presents the words as a kind of crossword puzzle grid, presumably to represent the interdisciplinary nature of the School. The user clicks on a word - Huguenot, Biscuit, Interstitial or Antisemistism - to name but four - and is taken to the video in question. Like other sites designed by Brady Haran, this one features a simple, stylish, slightly quirky approach which allows the enthusiasm of the academics to come across, without obscuring or trivialising the seriousness of their research.

The site is divided into three sections - Decouvrir le français, Apprendre le français and Enseigner le français. There is a lot of material, but the site is stylishly designed and easy to navigate. Of particular note is the Fables of La Fontaine using simple but effective animation and audio narration. The website also has complementary tools such as a dictionary, translation software, and an interactive language column by linguist Bernard Cerquiglin.

This French website is dedicated to the work of Jean Painlevé whose collected oeuvre of over 200 films is represented here in a selection of extracts along with stills, examples of Painlevé's photographic work, a timeline, texts (in French) and links to other sites. Painlevé is best known for his aquatic nature films, which, with their blend of science and surrealism have come to occupy their own genre: the ‘scientific poetic’ film. Less well-known is the remarkable clay animation film Barbe Bleue (1936 - 1938), produced by Painlevé and animated by Réne Bertrand, with music by Maurice Jaubert, represented here in a clip which, although brief, shows the 1995 restoration of the film in its vivid Gasparcolor glory.

The result of a joint project between the East Anglian Film Archive and Rouen based Pôle Image Haute-Normandie (PIHN), this Anglo-French collaboration presents hundreds of short films, and excerpts from longer films, from East Anglia and Upper Normandy, tracing the social and cultural history of the two regions in film. Many of the clips are accompanied by informative commentaries which were recorded especially for the project. Users should be aware that the films are not always presented in their original form: a piece about the fishing industry edits together two films, one from the 1930s and one from the 1950s and many of the films which would have originally been silent are accompanied by music as well as a voiceover. This caveat aside, the site, which can be searched by theme, location, year and keyword, is well presented and contains a wealth of fascinating material.
