Doodles are the fun, surprising, and sometimes spontaneous changes that are made to the Google logo to celebrate holidays, anniversaries, and the lives of famous artists, pioneers, and scientists. The Archive pages, arranged chronologically, preserve the Doodles of past years celebrating, for example, the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta, St Valentine’s Day, the Mexican 2015 elections and Saul Bass’ 93rd birthday. Clicking on the Doodle, some of which are animated and/or interactive, gives interesting information on the illustrator, the creative process and details of the event/celebration behind the logo.

The British Postal Museum and Archive has a series of podcasts on aspects of the British postal service. Some focus on philately and design, looking at how the work of artists such as Eric Ravilious and Barnett Freedman has shaped public perception of the Post Office. Other podcasts consider social and political aspects of the Post Office’s history. In one example Tony Benn speaks about how he created the National Girobank during his time as Postmaster General. In another Dr Katherine Rake speaks about an incident in 1909 when two suffragettes posted themselves to 10 Downing Street, in an attempt to deliver a message personally to Prime Minister Herbert Asquith.

The initial selection (August 2010) of over 5,000 images is drawn from the College’s collection of around 30,000 slides of student work. It features the work of hundreds of students across all departments, including animation, architecture & interiors, ceramics & glass, communication art & design, design products, fashion, metalwork & jewellery, industrial design, painting, photography, sculpture, stained glass, textiles, vehicle design and printmaking. Use of the images is restricted to non-commercial use and teaching.

Derived in part from the resource known as Artifact, a hub of the Resource Discovery Network (RDN), this excellent guide to websites on the ‘arts and creative industries’, provides helpful but not overwordy site descriptions and useful background material including an artists’ index and news features. NB Intute closed in July 2011 and the site has now been archived. No further resources are being added and no changes are being made to existing content, so the resource will increasingly become less useful and reliable.
