The video channel of the US-based online culture and current affairs magazine Slate. The magazine has a left-leaning bias and its tone is witty, irreverent and informative. For example, the video on FX/digital compositing explains how hidden special effects work in films in a very entertaining way. The Podcasts cover similar ground.

A free online guide and blog, launched in January 2010, on the business of factual television. Run by Peter Hamilton, a media content business advisor from New York, the site is initially discussing what the major US networks pay for content and will go on to cover in future weeks deal terms, budget line items, digital deliverable creep, music rights, payment schedules, theatrical distribution strategies, and much more.

Previously branded as In4mer, this Channel 4 site provides a fair amount of empirical data that will be of educational use. It gives details on a number of its programmes, as well as those shown of its digital channels, E4 and Film Four, with a breakdown by demographic group, as well copies of press releases about its schedules and its staff. Details are also given about its advertising rates and contact names and numbers for its featured programmes.

Professional English Online is aimed particularly at teachers and trainers of business English and English for Specific Purposes (ESP). The site hosts a blog and a section containing podcasts and vodcasts of interviews with leading teachers and writers on a wide range of subjects including English for nursing, complaining in English, and cultural awareness. At the end of 2010 the site was relaunched to incorporate more interactive features so it is now possible to comment on the blogs, podcasts and other material and rate their relevance.

Shotlist, part of the EBS Trust, produces subject-specific video materials for teaching and research, which are distributed at minimal cost to all UK education establishments, who are also able to purchase sub-masters from which they are permitted to copy, re-edit, and re-format the programmes according to their own needs. The site gives descriptions of the videos by subject: Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Engineering, Information Systems, Practical Maths, Psychology, and a series of lectures on Irish literary figures including Joyce, Wilde and Yeats.

Site dedicated to reporting American box-office statistics, sorted in a number of useful and ingenious ways, including by week, year, director, actor etc. In addition, the site also gives very useful statistics on VHS and DVD sales and rentals in the US, giving both the number of units sold and the revenue that they have brought in, all of which are compared with the film’s original cinema takings. International box office figures are also given by territory, with all revenues expressed in American dollars. In addition, reviews, news features, TV ratings, music sales and and other items are also included.

A service funded, until July 2011, by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) for accessing Internet resources for learning and teaching communities in the UK. Organised into 19 gateways covering Science and Technology, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Health and Life Sciences. Previously known as the Resource Discovery Network. NB Intute closed in July 2011 and the site has now been archived. No further resources are being added and no changes are being made to existing content, so the resource will increasingly become less useful and reliable.
