Presented by professor Kathy Williams, Director of Science at the Royal Botanic Gardens, the 25-episode series delves into Kew’s archive, including the herbarium of over seven million preserved plant specimens, to tell the story of how modern botany was born around the time of Kew’s establishment in 1759. It also examines how changes in scientific, economic and social preoccupations have influenced our attitudes to plants. The series is available indefinitely and episodes can be listened to individually or in five omnibus instalments.

Funded chiefly by the Gatsby Charitable Foundation, SAPS creates opportunities for teachers and students to find out more about plants and to become more interested in plant science. The How To videos are designed to help teachers and technicians carry out a range of interesting new biology practical experiments with secondary and post-16 students. The videos are intended as quick guides through the necessary practical steps and also suggest how this can be used in the classroom. The Library offers access to a collection of over 200 images to help illustrate ecology, plant biology and plant-animal interactions. There are also links to online teaching resources, with a focus on plant science and related subjects; back issues of the printed Newsletter Osmosis, with teaching resources focusing on practical activity are available too.

The importance of fungi for all aspects of life on Earth and the size of the fungi kingdom, which is six times larger than the kingdom of plant species, makes research in this little studied field crucial: for example, last year a new species of fungi was discovered in Pakistan which is capable of digesting and breaking down plastic; this could be a part of the solution to the global challenge of clearing plastic in oceans and on the land. The Fungi and Lichens website provides technical (but approachable) accounts of the current status of species in the British Isles, including descriptions, images, distribution data, ecology and conservation information. It is aimed at those with a serious interest in fungi, either as natural historians or professional biologists. The project is run by the Mycology Department at Kew Gardens who has just published the 2018 State of the World’s Fungi report.

Extremely popular daily science show, streamed via YouTube and presented by Hank Green and Michael Aranda. Each day has a different format news (eg. Friday is Science News Day, Monday features a short video about our ‘Weird World’, whereas Wednesday’s video features longer, more in-depth investigations). The format is energetic, upbeat and engaging and the items generally well-researched, although one video on Genetically Modified Organisms caused some controversy and was taken down from the site after being criticised, as biased and inaccurate by science blogger Myles Power. SciShow made a new video Why Are GMOs Bad? in which they acknowledge the flaws in the previous film and present a more balanced case.
