This site presents a range of resources relating to a five year project (2013-2018) to research and document the history of British television broadcast technology from 1960 onwards. Led by Professor John Ellis of Royal Holloway, University of London, the European Research Council-funded project explores the ways in which the look and sound of the television programmes of the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s was directly affected by the technology used in the making of them.
One of the project’s most original and inspiring ideas is to reunite industry veterans with examples of the technologies they once used and film them working with the old equipment. The resulting reconstructions have been turned into a series of videos which provide contextual material to stand alongside original archive footage and give a valuable insight into the teamwork and adaptability of the men and women working in what Professor Ellis calls ‘the heroic age of television’ . The videos are available on this site as well as the project’s YouTube channel and are available for reuse under a Creative Commons Attribution Licence. Reconstructions include, 16mmm filming preparation, which shows how a typical television film crew went about the task of filming footage, 16mm editing cutting technique, which shows how television film editors organised and assembled raw footage (rushes) using a variety of editing machines and techniques 16mm film processing, in which laboratory staff demonstrate the various skills and methods used to process exposed negative films.

Launched in 2015, this resource is the largest single source of information on films produced in and about the Caribbean, featuring information on more than 500 films from the English, Dutch, French and Spanish-speaking Caribbean. Entries feature, synopsis, production details, brief credits and cast information and most are accompanied by excerpts or trailers. The focus is on contemporary film, so most of the films are post-2000 but a Classic Films section includes films reflecting the region’s rich cinematic history, from well-known titles like The Harder They Come to less widely recognised examples such as Haïti, le chemin de la liberté, the first Haitian feature film. The database features examples from the Caribbean diaspora, so films set in the UK, such as Babylon also feature. A section on Caribbean Women in Film highlights the work of female directors and a there are also links to information about film festivals, film schools and a bibliography.

Film site primarily devoted to a list of the 1,000 greatest films created from an aggregation of nearly seven hundred individual film polls from journals, magazines and websites, including Sight and Sound, Empire, Facets, Positif, and The Village Voice. The site also includes the no less extensive but more narrowly focused list of the 21st century’s most acclaimed films, and a growing set of director profiles.

The site’s other resource - 1000 noir films is currently a work in progress: beginning with a list of the most 100 frequently cited film noirs, and then gradually adding a further 900 films noir (or films with prominent noir elements). The enterprise (modestly described as ‘hobby-driven’) is the creation of Bill Georgaris and his partner Vicki Platt, who are based in Adelaide, Australia.

This podcast is based on the simple idea of taking Hollywood scripts that have not yet been made into films and presenting them as full length radio plays, performed by Hollywood actors. The podcast is hosted by Leonard Franklin’s Black List site, which exists to support screenwriters by recommending their work to industry producers and professionals. Another interesting resources on the Black List site is 500 Feminist Films, a list of films (with links to imdb) based on a simple set of criteria: to qualify as a feminist film the film must have at least one of the following: a female director; a female screenwriter; a female lead; or features strong pro-woman themes. The list could be a good starting point for classroom/semimar discussion on the subject. The Table Reads podcast is also freely available in iTunes

This resource was established at the University of Kent in 2013 to celebrate, preserve, and provide access to the archives and records of British stand-up comedy and comedians. The information on the University of Kent Special Collections page gives details of the available material, which includes stills, posters, production documents and audiovisual content, in the form of off-air recordings and video recordings of live events. A full catalogue will be made available online in 2016 but until then interested researchers can email the Special Collections team (specialcollections@kent.ac.uk) regarding the collections, which can be viewed in the Special Collections & Archives Reading Room in the Templeman Library. The digitisation is ongoing but some audiovisual content is already available on Soundcloud, including material from Attila the Stockbroker, Linda Smith, Mark Thomas and Richard Herring. The project’s excellent and informative blog provides regular updates about new acquisitions as well as interesting thoughts and advice on audiovisual digitisation on a budget in terms of equipment, funding and workflow.
