    Presented in a half-hour magazine format, this series, which started in May 2012, features authors and academics discussing their latest books, generally in the political and economic arena, but venturing into linguistics, film studies, psychogeography, anthropology and even Scandinavian crime novels. Podcast 4 - London 2012 Olympics: What happens when global meets local? - sees Architectural Advisor to the 2012 Olympic Games and LSE Cities Professor Ricky Burdett talking about the primacy of legacy and the importance of leaving something that becomes "a real piece of city", followed by writer - and Hackney resident - Iain Sinclair’s take on the Olympics, in which he takes issue with the accelerated rate of change, arguing that the history of the place, and the needs of local people have been pushed aside by the demands of the "grand project". In Podcast 5, Melanie Williams, Lecturer in Film and Television Studies at the University of East Anglia, explains how film and gender studies make natural companions.

    Providing ‘online access to the histories of cinema, broadcasting, and recorded sound’ this initiative consists of digitised collections of classic media periodicals that are now in the public domain, including the 1907 to 1919 run of the Moving Picture World, one of the the cinema industry’s earliest trade papers. Other collections include fan magazines, a 'Hollywood Studio System’ collection spanning the years 1918-1948 which includes the Hollywood Reporter and the Motion Picture Daily, as well as technical journals, yearbooks and a ‘Non Theatrical’ collection which encompasses journals devoted to the use of film in business and education as well as those directed at home movie enthusiasts. All the journals are word searchable and can also be accessed via the Internet Archive. An essential resource for film researchers.

    This long-standing online journal, established in the US in 1999, concerns itself with alternately celebrating, dissecting and generally engaging with popular culture in its various forms. It includes reviews, articles, interviews, blogs and multimedia materials and has amassed large quantities of material, much of its with a serious, academic flavour. Many articles are gathered around themes or to discuss the work of specific individuals.

    Calling itself the ‘first scientific video journal’, Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is a peer-reviewed, online journal devoted to the publication of biological, medical, chemical and physical research in a video format. Video articles are organised into sections on Neuroscience, Immunity & Infection, Clinical & Translational Medicine, Bioengineering, Applied Physics. JoVE is devoted to publishing scientific research in a visual format in order to introduce clarity, dynamism and efficiency into the scientific process. Many of the videos require a subscription in order to be able to see beyond a brief preview.
