    This beta site presents the entire range of podcasts produced by the Open University. The site is divided into three sections: OU Learn, OU Research and OU Life. The OU Learn podcasts are divided into fourteen subject areas from Arts and Humanities to Social Sciences. Within each subject area, the podcasts are further arranged as ‘albums’ consisting of numbered tracks, containing material relevant to OU courses. The podcasts come with transcripts, related links and often feature video material too. Users can subscribe via RSS feed, iTunes, or Miro.

    This resource was created by Alex Tabarrok and Tyler Cowen, Economics professors at George Mason University, who also run a Marginal Revolution blog. MRUniversity offers free video lectures in economics, with the option of enrolling in courses and taking exams, in the manner of MOOCs such as Khan Academy and Coursera. The videos - PowerPoint slide presentations, with the lecturer’s voiceover - cover all aspects of economics, including Development Economics, Classical Economics, International Trade and The Eurozone Crisis. The resource is freely available and is particularly aimed at less affluent students and students and lecturers from developing countries.

    Aimed at those just starting careers in hairdressing, as well as more experienced practitioners, this well-designed, freely available resource presents step-by-step videos, tests and guides to an expanding collection of hairdressing styles and techniques. The site is made up of four main sections: Male Cuts, Female Cuts, Lessons and Skills and Equipment and the resources are usefully mapped to the various competencies required to attain different NVQ levels in hairdressing and barbering.

    This is the online presence of Critical Studies in Television, a journal which aims to promote and advance television as an academic discipline. The website is updated regularly and features news from the industry and academia, blogs, conference news, information on TV archives and resources and the latest research news. The site features blog entries by Television Studies academics, on a broad range of subjects, including this interesting piece by Lorna Jowett on the challenges of Teaching TV. The site was relaunched in November 2016 with a new design. All the old content has been preserved.

    This interdisciplinary research enterprise, based at St Edmund’s College, Cambridge, was set up in 2006 to conduct research into various topics at the intersection between science and faith. The multimedia archive of videos and podcasts features courses, lectures, research seminars and discussions. The titles give a flavour of the subject matter: Genetic and Cellular Complexity: A Critique of Intelligent Design; Is God a Virus? and Historical Interactions Between Science and Religion. The material can be watched in Flash video, or downloaded in medium or high-quality video, and can also be accessed in audio only formats. The lectures are also available to buy, via an online shop, in CD or DVD format.

    This resource from the University of Warwick was created in 2012 to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Dickens. The site features short films, podcasts, and articles as well as a 45 minute documentary. Led by Professor John Mee, the videos and podcasts explore various aspects of the novelist’s work, covering Dickens and crime, Dickens in relation to his philanthropic works, as well as wider aspects of Victorian society. Writer Andrew Davies contributes to the discussion on screen adaptation, talking here with Professor Gary Watt about the cinematic nature of Dickens as well as the challenges he has faced in adapting the works for the screen. Aspects of certain novels, including Bleak House, Great Expectations and Little Dorrit are explored in greater depth in individual podcasts. The discussion on Our Mutual Friend, for example, looks at the destabilising effect of the novel’s dark humour and its presentation of human beings as commodities to be bartered and traded.

    Offering over 3,000 free courses, consisting of video lectures and tutorials stored on YouTube, this website, the brainchild of MIT and Harvard Business School Graduate, Salman Khan, claims to be at the vanguard of education’s digital future, along with other websites like Coursera, and Udacity, proferring a model of learning based on Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs). The Khan Academy offers largely courses in Maths, Science, which includes Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Cosmology and Astronomy, Electrical Engineering, Health and Medicine, Computing, Economics & Finance, and Arts & Humanities, with individual section on Grammar, World History, Art History and Music.

    The London College of Fashion has gathered together a number of videos on its LCF Channel website which highlight the work of graduating students from its BA and MA courses and include footage of Catwalk Shows as well as a Performance Archive showcasing the work of students studying costume design, make up and prosthetics, costume for performance and technical effects. The site also features interviews with students and staff and a number of 'how to’ videos illustrating the design and manufacturing of a pair of shoes, a handbag and lipstick.

    Funded by Film London and the BBC, this site aims to be the key web destination for those interested in filmmaking on a micro-budget. A series of videos with industry experts aims to take would-be filmmakers through all the stages of the process and offers a comprehensive introduction to legal matters, finance and budgets, selling and distribution, post-production and exhibition, to name just some of the areas covered. There is information on sales and distribution, festivals, location shooting, cross media strategies, and a comprehensive guide to the various sources of funding available. A series of recordings from events held at Film London’s Microschool is available in podcast form, featuring lectures and talks on location filming, music, screenwriting, casting and working with actors to name but a few. The site also provides news on the latest in the independent film-making sector, an excellent links page and has a Get Inspired section, covering films which have been funded by the Microwave scheme. An essential port of call for all low-budget filmmakers, or anyone considering a career in the industry.
