This German website (with subtitles in English) consists of a series of video interviews with women scientists about their careers, lives and experiences with science. Each video takes as its starting point an object which is significant in some way to the women’s life as a scientist - an old sofa, a begonia, a fragment of rock - and then proceeds from there. This anecdotal approach makes for a fascinating and revealing series of interviews, in which these women talk about what motivates and drives them as they talk about how they balance the demands of career and personal life.

Presented in a half-hour magazine format, this series, which started in May 2012, features authors and academics discussing their latest books, generally in the political and economic arena, but venturing into linguistics, film studies, psychogeography, anthropology and even Scandinavian crime novels. Podcast 4 - London 2012 Olympics: What happens when global meets local? - sees Architectural Advisor to the 2012 Olympic Games and LSE Cities Professor Ricky Burdett talking about the primacy of legacy and the importance of leaving something that becomes "a real piece of city", followed by writer - and Hackney resident - Iain Sinclair’s take on the Olympics, in which he takes issue with the accelerated rate of change, arguing that the history of the place, and the needs of local people have been pushed aside by the demands of the "grand project". In Podcast 5, Melanie Williams, Lecturer in Film and Television Studies at the University of East Anglia, explains how film and gender studies make natural companions.

Alistair Cooke’s first Letter from America - initially called American Letter - was broadcast by the BBC in March, 1946. It was to be the first of 2,869 such broadcasts, spanning 58 years, making it by far the longest-running talk programme of any radio station in the world. The 920 surviving recordings, broadcast between 1946 and 2004, are now online. The can be searched by date and by theme, the latter including such categories as US presidents, race, music & movies, history and so on.

A promotional and educational resource operated by the National Film and Sound Archive containing information about and extracts from a huge selection of Australian feature films, documentaries, television programmes, newsreels, short films, advertisements, animations, and home-movies produced over the last 100 years. The site brings together material from the collections of the National Film and Sound Archive, as well as the National Archives of Australia, the ABC, the Special Broadcasting Service, and the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies (AIATSI). As well as credits and transcripts, many of the film clips are accompanied by detailed notes for teachers, pointing out the educational value of the material. There are also video interviews with Australian filmmakers and a series of thematic essays on different parts of the collection, all illustrated with film clips, ranging from Horror in Australian Cinema, to A Short History of Indigenous Filmmaking and a look at the Roads and Traffic Authority Collection.

The BBC has created a Reith Lectures microsite. At present 194 broadcasts are available, with the earliest recording being Frank Fraser Darling’s broadcasts from 1969. The Reith Lectures were inaugurated in 1948 by the BBC to mark the historic contribution made to public service broadcasting by Sir John (later Lord) Reith, the corporation’s first director-general. The very first Reith lecturer was the philosopher, Bertrand Russell who spoke on ‘Authority and the Individual’. Among his successors were Arnold Toynbee (The World and the West, 1952), Robert Oppenheimer (Science and the Common Understanding, 1953) and J.K. Galbraith (The New Industrial State, 1966). More recently, the Reith lectures have been delivered by the Chief Rabbi, Dr Jonathan Sacks (The Persistence of Faith, 1990), Jean Aitchison (The Language Web, 1996), Patricia J. Williams (Race and Race Relations, 1997), John Keegan (War and Our World, 1998) Anthony Giddens (Runaway World, 1999) and Onora O’Neill (A Question of Trust, 2002).

Hundreds of audio extracts from the BBC archives can be accessed here using Real Player, and feature a wide range of personalities, including Siegfried Sassoon, Alfred Hitchcock, Roald Dahl, George Bernard Shaw, Stevie Smith and dozens of others. It is possible to search alphabetically by name or by profession such as: actors, architects, cartoonists, composers, dancers, film directors, musicians, painters, photographers, poets, religious thinkers, sculptors, sports and writers. The individual clips are supplemented with biographical notes, and the site, part of the BBC’s main audio-visual site AudioVideo is extremely well presented and easy to use. This site was originally knows as Voices from the archive.

Part of the now defunct ThriveOnline Organic Food Video Library was incorporated into a sister site, Oxygen.com. Oxygen is also a channel on American TV aimed at women, and the video gallery on the site includes streamed extracts from the channel’s programmes using QuickTime. Some of the clips come from British comedies, such as Nighty Night, Absolutely Fabulous and Suburban Shootout, but most of the extracts are from American shows, including Xena: Warrior Princess, Roseanne, Birth Stories, Drastic Plastic Surgery and many more.

This resource brings together a collection of unique moving images illustrating what life was like for ordinary people in Britain during the Second World War, as seen through amateur documentaries, newsreels, government films, and home movies. The clips can be browsed by such themes as Children in wartime, displaced people, home & family life, victory celebrations and others or though a simple timeline, from 1936 to 1963. It showcases moving images from seven regional screen archives and collections based around the UK. Many of the films are in colour and offer excellent supporting and contextual essays and assorted bits of information as well as detailed synopses. Windows Media Player or QuickTime are required.
Also of interest is On The Home Front a joint project between Screen Archive South East and Whitehawk Primary School, in which primary school children learned about World War II through the use of archive film and working with local people who remember life on the Home Front.
