This podcast is based on the simple idea of taking Hollywood scripts that have not yet been made into films and presenting them as full length radio plays, performed by Hollywood actors. The podcast is hosted by Leonard Franklin’s Black List site, which exists to support screenwriters by recommending their work to industry producers and professionals. Another interesting resources on the Black List site is 500 Feminist Films, a list of films (with links to imdb) based on a simple set of criteria: to qualify as a feminist film the film must have at least one of the following: a female director; a female screenwriter; a female lead; or features strong pro-woman themes. The list could be a good starting point for classroom/semimar discussion on the subject. The Table Reads podcast is also freely available in iTunes

An interactive educational resource based on the multimedia archive of filmmaker Sally Potter. At the heart of the resource is a Visual Browser which allows the user to view individual key frames taken from every shot in the film Orlando and link them to other archival assets such as script pages, call sheets, continuity reports etc. Each key frame also links to the clip from which it is taken so that users can view each individual shot from the film. The site is clearly laid out so that users can trace each stage of the film’s history from development, (scriptwriting, storyboard, design) through pre-production, production, post-production, the finished film and distribution. Additional resources called pathways have been created by the site’s users featuring research notes, image blogs, and annotations linked to the assets they have used for their personal research projects. A video presentation in the FAQ section explains the origins of the project. The videos are hosted on blip.tv and require the latest Flash plug-in to view.

Academics from the University of Edinburgh discuss a theme of contemporary relevance in this monthly podcast. The first episode saw professors from the schools of law, economics and history discuss the issues associated with Scottish independence before the 2014 referendum. Other podcasts have more of a magazine format, covering several topics, but the general focus is on current political, economic and social issues, including migration within the EU, the rise of Russian nationalism, and women’s rights, as well as more local issues, such as Scottish oral history and the negative effects of Edinburgh’s self-image. The podcast is also available on iTunes.

A portal which helps people to ‘find great podcasts’. Curated by Max Temkin and Veronica Corzo-Duchardt, the site presents a selection of mainly American podcasts, arranged under a number of topics, including Tech, Science & Education, Politics & Econ and Storytelling. An Interview page features transcripts of question and answer sessions with podcasters, writers, designers and other culturally-aware, creative people, who talk about their favourite podcasts, and why (and how) they like listening to them. The site works well because its focus is fairly narrow: the emphasis is on curation, and presenting a carefully selected range of interesting podcasts, rather than a comprehensive but overwhelming list of resources.

This massive, groundbreaking project from Columbia University’s Center for Digital Research and Scholarship highlights the role that women played in the silent film era, emphatically not just as actresses, but in editing, production, direction, writing, exhibition and design. Phase 1 of the project focuses on women in the USA and Latin America. Further phases will look at women in other national cinemas of the silent era. There is already a large amount of information available here, from Overview Essays, in-depth profiles of Pioneers, with biographies, filmographies and bibliographies and a Resources page, with links to archives, distributors, reference works and silent screen organisations.

This portal provides access to American oral history and sound archive material, using open source software to enable content providers to store and catalogue their files so that their collections can be preserved in perpetuity. The software allows the files to be tagged with rich metadata (including recording date, broadcast date, location, subject, interviewer and interviewee) so that the collections can be easily searched and accessed by researchers. The material is streamed and is not available for download and new material is being added as it is digitised and catalogued.

Collections include Studs Terkel’s interviews from the 1952-1997 radio show, The Studs Terkel Program, on the Chicago station WFMT, featuring Simone de Beauvoir, James Baldwin, Sidney Poitier and Diane Arbus, amongst others. Other collections, such as the Pacifica Radio Archives and Illinois Public Media document some of the most significant changes in recent American history, particularly the 1950s and 1960s. First hand accounts from prime movers and campaigners in the African-American civil rights movement, the women’s movement, and from student activism and gay rights campaigners, present a vital picture of a time of political and social upheaval from outside the mainstream US media.
