Making the Modern World is a online exhiition bringing "powerful stories about science and invention from the eighteenth century to today". It explains the development and the global spread of modern industrial society and its effects on all our lives. The site expands upon the permanent landmark gallery at the Science Museum, using the Web and dynamic multimedia techniques to go far beyond what a static exhibition can do. It features Guided Tours, a Timeline, Icons of Invention, a section on Everyday Life, and Learning Modules. The tours include Women Making the Modern World, Exhibiting the Modern World, and Making Modern Time, with rich media content including audio descriptions and beautiful design throughout.

This fascinating resource is dedicated to reviewing international classic and cult movies on DVD, staying for the most part well clear of mainstream English-language films. Apart from essays and reviews and information on forthcoming releases, its most prominent feature is its evaluation of the technical audio and visual content of various DVD versions of films from around the world. The site looks at thousands of feature films and provides high resolution frame grabs to compare the visual quality of titles released in different territories, as well as comments on the audio presentation and the extras included. A dedicated Blu-ray microsite is particularly valuable.

Formerly the BBC’s Videos for Learning and Teaching and more recently known as BBC Active, this is an important catalogue for the wide-ranging video tapes of previously transmitted programmes offered by the Corporation to educational institutions. Sadly, as part of its rebranding, the prices have increased up by up to a factor of five (the average cost per title is now £125). The material however remains irreplaceable. It includes such classic documentaries as Life on Earth, The Ascent of Man and items from the Horizon series as well as the perennial BBC Shakespeare titles. These can be by title or contributor, as well as by series and by the following subject categories: Anthropology, the Arts, Business, Drama, Education, Engineering, Environment, Literature, Health & Medicine, History, Natural World, Science & Technology and Social Issues. These titles can also be licensed separately for online learning, festival screenings and exhibitions. Please note that only a small part of the holdings are listed online and it is a good idea to request titles directly.

Nanotechnology is the study and design of systems at the nanometer scale - the scale of atoms and molecules. This site, courtesy of the University of Wisconsin, includes a variety of short films to explore the issues involved, which are divided into basic, intermediate and advanced categories, with extremely good encoding. The various experiments conducted include explorations of DNA, LCDs, Silicon, thermoelectricity, atomic imaging, catalytic converters and even make use of Lego building blocks.
