Based at the University of Portsmouth, Lifesign is a JISC-funded project to develop, catalogue and evaluate the use of streaming media for learning and teaching in the broad life sciences. Its object is to identify appropriate film/video sources in the life sciences and deliver these across networks and the internet. The site includes sample streams in different bandwidths (using Windows Media Player) in such fields as electrocardiography, medical imaging, microscopy and sports science. A clearly designed and helpful resource which also serves as an advertisement and valuable guide to the potential for streamed media for learning and teaching.
This site is no longer active, but the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine offers a capture of the website as it appeared on 05/03/2005. This does not include access to the moving images.

Each sport has a video masterclass (e.g. for cricket, Ian Salisbury demonstrating spin bowling and Mark Ramprakash showing batting strokes; for football, the Fulham Ladies show how to get past defenders), information on equipment, rules, and how to take part across the country, as well as special features, interviews with stars, and plenty of illustrative material. There is also a ‘Disability’ section for each sport, a ‘virtual gym’, and advice on diet and sports injuries. The video requires RealPlayer, and is available for modem and broadband connections.

Part of the Internet Archive, which also covers archived moving images (The Internet Moving Images Archive), audio and software, the Wayback Machine holds cached versions of thousands of websites and billions of pages, allowing users to look at sites that are no longer available or at earlier versions of ones that are still around. An invaluable resource that, due to the gigantic nature of the holdings, is slightly hampered by the fact that no list of the holdings can be easily provided. This means inevitably that correct recall of the URL in question is necessary, or failing that, searching for it on the web first.
