The Informedia research group at Carnegie Mellon University works with speech recognition, image processing, and language technologies to facilitate machine understanding of video materials. This site is devoted to aspects of Informedia research especially pertinent to digital video libraries for cultural assets, particularly oral histories, and hosts interfaces that build from automatic alignment of transcripts to video, named entity detection, geocoding to support map search, and other multimedia indexing and interface technologies. The IDVL interfaces are built with Adobe Flex, producing a Flash application. The website also includes a number of articles and presentations that come out of IDVL research and projects.
The British Pathé newsreel archive contains over 90,000 individual film items spanning the period 1896 - 1976. LUX focuses on visual arts-based moving image work, a definition which includes experimental film, video art, installation art, performance art, personal documentary, essay films and animation. The organisation’s main activities are distribution, exhibition, publishing, commissioning, research, and professional development support, and the newly designed website neatly reflects all these activities. Of particular note is the easily searchable collection of 4500 films and videos by approximately 1500 artists, which evolved from the holdings of the now-defunct London Filmmakers Co-operative, London Video Arts and The Lux Centre. These works are available for hire or sale (via the online shop), some may be viewed online in their entirety (Video section) and some are included in online themed exhibitions (listed in the ‘What’s On’ section which also includes detailed information on LUX projects and events, and a calendar listing of upcoming events across London involving artists’ moving image). The site also features a blog and downloadable podcasts and vodcasts of interviews with artists, documentation of LUX events and specially commissioned content.
