In its own words, Russian Archives Online (RAO) "represents prominent archives like the Russian State Film & Photo Archive at Krasnogorsk - RGAKFD, Russian State Archive of Scientific & Technical Documents - RGANTD and various other institutions of the Russian State". Included on the site are a number of slide shows and film clips (via RealPlayer) on topics such as leaders, athletics, the Red Army etc., as well as a brief tour of the Krasnogorsk archive. It is also possible to view picture and paper catalogues online, though it will be necessary to set the browser to read Cyrillic (available on the site) to access more than just the English language sample materials.
This text-heavy site offers information on seventeen key years in the history of the USSR, from 1917 to 1991. Each yearly section comes with texts, contexts, images, music files and video files (using Real Player) from contemporary Soviet films, taken from the Russian State Film & Photo Archive at Krasnogorsk. The project is funded by the National Endowment for Humanities (NEH), and created by James von Geldern (Macalester College) and Lewis Siegelbaum (Michigan State University).
RUSCICO is a commercial association of Russian and foreign companies remastering and distributing classic Soviet and Russian films on DVD. The database of 120 titles includes full cast, credit and synopsis information and future release details if the DVDs are not already available. In Russian and English.
Part of the Internet Archive, which also covers archived moving images (The Internet Moving Images Archive), audio and software, the Wayback Machine holds cached versions of thousands of websites and billions of pages, allowing users to look at sites that are no longer available or at earlier versions of ones that are still around. An invaluable resource that, due to the gigantic nature of the holdings, is slightly hampered by the fact that no list of the holdings can be easily provided. This means inevitably that correct recall of the URL in question is necessary, or failing that, searching for it on the web first.
