This self-styled ‘Robin Hood of the avant-garde’ was established 15 years ago as an archive and distributor of art films and is now partially based in Mexico. The disclaimer tells us: ‘All materials are for non-commercial and / or educational use only.' There is some fascinating and rare work here as well as some genuine obscurities. Along with Tweets and podcasts, the site hosts dozens of films, shorts and features, ranging from early works by the likes of Brian de Palma and Joseph Cornell to more widely-known experimental filmmakers such as Andy Warhol, Jean Cocteau and Steve McQueen. Part of the site is now devoted to electronic music and sound. The website is large and cleanly laid out though the lack of any guided search tools is unfortunate - the legal aspects behind the hosting of much of the content is at best questionable, but its intentions are seemingly honourable.

A quirky website maintained by an enthusiastic collector and restorer of vintage televisions, radios and phonographs. It includes photographs of items from his collection, with accompanying descriptions of varying lengths. The televisions are divided into post-war table and console sets, pre-war, and projection televisions. There is also a section on record changers that includes Quicktime videos of the equipment in action, together with photographs and notes on their history, development and maintenance.

    Courses, Producers/Broadcasters

This large and developing resource is part of the BBC Academy, which exists in its own words to put, ‘training and development at the heart of the BBC and also works with the wider broadcast industry, equipping people with skills they need for a lifetime of employability in the ever-changing media landscape.' It also provides courses, some in partnership with Creative Skillset (see separate entry). The site, currently in beta test mode, aims to provide a guide to training resources for those interested in a career in the media, specifically broadcast radio and television. This includes dozens of interviews with industry professionals discussing their areas of expertise. The site is organised as a guide to a wide variety of professional activities, from the lofty heights of director and executive producer to more artisanal jobs such as make-up designer and sound designer. Most of the videos are about 2 to 3 minutes in length and provide succinct profiles of those working in core behind-the-scenes production jobs. The emphasis is split fairly evenly between TV and Radio though there is also a new section devoted to online production that will be expanding. See also the separate entry under BBC College of Journalism. Along with job descriptions there are also practical tips on a broad range of subjects, from how best to shoot and night or to record a ‘vox pops’ to managing the relationship between a presenter and the producer.

At the end of 2009 this brilliant site designed to teach skills to BBC journalists was opened to public access in the UK. Using hundreds of video and audio examples alongside interactive modules, the site provides masterclasses covering craft skills, law, and ethics & values. There is also an active discussion forum, glossary, and currently a section on covering the general election. It is intended to make the site available by subscription outside the UK. Part of the BBC Academy, see also the separate entry for the sister site, BBC College of Production.

The inevitably huge Radio 3 website of course includes listings for the BBC’s classical music and arts radio channel, but there is a rich array of supporting information in the sections on Classical, Jazz, World and New, Arts and Drama, including sound and video clips, and sections devoted to individual programmes. Particularly welcome is the Feature Archive on past programmes. The live broadcast is also streamed from the site. The schedules were heavily revamped in 2007.

Web version of the American museum based in Virginia which offers an interactive look at the news in its Cybermuseum section, offering essays, photo and streamed images (via QuickTime) on such diverse topics as the Holocaust, the American Presidential elections and the 1969 moon landing. The presentation is agreeably straight forward and the content is aimed chiefly at pre-adults.

Remarkable online museum devoted to the work of the inventor of the wireless, Guglielmo Marconi, his other scientific discoveries, the impact of wireless, the development of modern communications, and the work of the Marconi company today. Beautifully inventive in its use of Flash animation (version 4), the site illustrates Marconi’s life and legacy through sound and film clips (using Real, Windows Media Player or QuickTime), photographs, Flash animations (including the role of Marconi broadcasts in the Titanic and the capture of Dr. Crippen), photographs and case studies. There is an online archive with digitised Marconicgrams, documents, and ephemera relating to early radio, television and communications history. There is a simpler HTML version of the site which includes access to the archive.
