This website complements Michael Chanan’s film about the anti-government protest movement, which covers events - demonstrations, marches, sit-ins - from November 2010 to the end of March 2011. Chanan gives a detailed explanation of the reasons - theoretical, financial and political - for making the film as a video diary, filmed on a handheld camera, with no voice-over or commentary. As a seasoned documentary filmmaker and academic who was radicalised in the 1960s, he sees his film as a celebration of the politicisation of today’s students, as well as an expression of opposition to mainstream media representations of the protesters. The site also features reviews, links and a video blog, featuring some of the footage used in the final film. A DVD of Chronicle of Protest is available to buy via the site and the film is also free to view on Vimeo.

Documentarian and campaigner Barbara Trent has created this resource to showcase the output of a collective of independent filmmakers, whose work confronts some of the murkier aspects of American foreign policy. From the Iran - Contra affair, through the 1989 invasion of Panama, to the Iraq War and the War on Terror, the website presents clips from the documentaries, together with links to filmmakers’ websites, where DVD copies of the films can be purchased.

The Gifford Lectures were established in 1898 "to contribute to the advancement of theological and philosophical thought". The lectures take place over the course of the academic year in four Scottish universities: St Andrews, Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh. The contents of the series from 2009 onwards are freely available as video and audio podcasts. Recent speakers include Terry Eagleton speaking on the God Debate, and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown on The Future of Jobs and Justice. Perhaps more typical is historian Diarmaid MacCulloch’s series of lectures on the history of silence in the Christian church. The series is also streamed on a YouTube channel.

The Filmoteca Espanola’s new online platform streams various short films, documentaries and feature films from its archives. The newsreel NO-DO (Noticiarios y Documentales) which ran from 1943 - 1981 has recently been made available to view in its entirety on the site, providing a fascinating and invaluable record of life in Spain under General Franco, albeit one viewed through the prism of a series which was closely linked with the dictator’s regime. Many of the newsreels are pure propaganda, showing Franco opening public works, giving speeches and the like but much of the material also focuses on everyday Spanish life, covering sports, entertainment, fashion, scientific and technological advances as well as an "Instantaneas Mundiales" slot which provides a brief round-up of international news. Digitised programme sheets are linked to the videos and viewable in pdf format. Although some of the original audio commentaries have been lost, the standard of digitisation of the newsreels themselves is uniformly excellent, making this an essential resource for students of modern Spanish history and newsreel historians alike.

Featuring digitised Party Election Broadcasts from the UK’s general elections of 1955, 1959 and 1964, this site, which is hosted by Sheffield University, also provides a wealth of contextual information, including the reminiscences of John Grist, links to rules and guidelines governing party political broadcasts, links to transcripts and other resources, and a select bibliography. Although the scope - there are 22 broadcasts in all - may seem relatively narrow, this is the first time that these broadcasts have been publicly accessible, offering scholars the opportunity to study in depth the beginnings and development of political communication in Britain in the televisual era.

This website is the result of a study conducted by Aberystwyth University to explore how the ‘golden age of television’ - ie. from the 1960s to the 1990s - influenced family life in Wales and to collect a range of views and recollections that together, in the words of project leader Dr Iwan Morus, "represent a national collective memory of television in Wales." The interviews were conducted around eight significant themes or events, including the Aberfan Disaster, Devolution Referendums, the Investiture of Prince Charles and the Drowning of Tryweryn. The interviewees were selected from four distinct geographical and linguistic communities, from the Rhondda and Carmarthen in the south to Wrexham and Caernarfon in the north. The resulting oral testimonies, in Welsh and English, provide a fascinating and often moving account of how a nation saw itself and how the act of remembering, itself a crucial ingredient in the formation of a national identity, can be shaped by media representations. The site is now under The People’s Collection in Wales.

Beta version of new website hosted by YouTube and launched by WITNESS, in partnership with video playlist creator Storyful. The site aims to enable citizen journalists, activists and other organisations to upload footage about human rights abuses and protest movements from all over the world. Amateur video footage is becoming increasingly important in reporting such stories, particularly in countries where media output is controlled by repressive regimes, and this site aims to curate and provide context and background information to the proliferating amount of material, both to facilitate greater understanding of the political situation and to encourage further engagement and activism. A series of video clips collected under the heading Anatomy of a Syrian Bombing gives a good idea of how the site organises and uses footage: it shows the traumatic and distressing narrative of a rocket attack on a rural village in Idlib, from the fall of the bombs, the destruction caused, to the search for and discovery of victims, both alive and dead.
