This site - also known as CroMe - presents interviews with Croatian citizens who have experienced violent situations in the time period 1941 - 1995: a timespan covering World War II, the Yugoslavia period and the Balkan conflicts of the 90s. There are hundreds of interviews, ‘with a particular emphasis on women and marginalised ethnic minorities, as well as on victims, particularly former inmates and family members of killed and missing persons’. Users can narow their search by word (in the text summary or subtitle) theme, place, region. The site is available in an English version but most of the videos are, of course, in Croatian. There is, however, a small selection which feature searchable English subtitles.

This fascinating microsite presents the only known audio recording of spy Guy Burgess, which was made by Burgess in 1951, just before he defected to the Soviet Union. In the recording, Burgess recalls his meeting with Winston Churchill in 1938. The tape was recovered from the FBI by two academics at City University: former head of ITN, Professor Stewart Purvis and media historian Jeff Hulbert. The site tells not only the story of how Purvis and Hulbert tracked down the recording but also includes a contextual essay on the significance of the tape, an events timeline, a full transcript of the tape’s contents, an FBI memo by J. Edgar Hoover, a video recording of the moment when Purvis and Hulbert opened the package from the FBI, and a Channel 4 News report by Michael Crick about the story.

The material is all freely available on the site. Researchers wishing to download any of the content are required to fill in a short request form.

Founded in 2005, this American site pioneered split-screen video dialogues - or diavlogs - about politics and ideas. A central aspiration of the site is to present a diversity of views, rather than cleaving to a dominant ideology. The result is a lively forum that aims to help people see things from perspectives other than their own. The site features a number of different programmes, from Foreign Entanglements, which debates American foreign policy, to The DMZ, in which Liberal Bill Scher and conservative Matt Lewis discuss recent political events. The site’s main focus is political but culture and the arts, science, and socionomic issues are also represented. The site is well presented and the videos themselves have bookmarks to help navigation, which is helpful given the digressive nature of some of the material, such as this video where scientist John Horgan enthuses about why Jane Austen was like a scientist.
