Indiana University’s moving image archive is one of the largest and most comprehensive academic film collections in the world. Particularly noteworthy is its vast educational film collection, which includes career training films, U.S. Department of War productions, and more than 5,600 programmes produced by the National Educational Television (NET) network, the precursor to PBS. A selection of over 200 digitised films from the archive is now freely available to view online. With prominence given to the educational films, this resource provides a valuable window into the history and development of the use of moving image in education and covers a wide range of academic subjects including African American Studies, Anatomy and Physiology, Film Studies, Psychology and Teacher Education. The collection covers over eight decades, from 1909 to 1994, but the majority of films are from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The standard of the clips is generally good but in many cases the deterioration of the original film is inevitably reflected in the quality of the digital object itself.

A website featuring short films about science, made by schoolchildren, teachers, scientists, students and researchers. The project was originally inspired by a desire to explore what ‘public service children’s media’ might look like in the Web 2.0 world, together with a sense that science and engineering lend themselves particularly well to practical, accessible filmmaking. The films can be searched according to eight broad subjects (Biology, Careers, Chemistry, Earth Sciences & Environment, Engineering, Maths, Miscellaneous and Physics) and by Type (Documentary, Experiment, Explanation etc.). The site is still fully available but appears not to have been updated since 2012.

GEOSET (Global Educational Outreach for Science, Engineering and Technology) is a freely accessible, searchable internet gateway to a selection of SET and related educational materials. Most of the videos take the form of ‘concept modules’ - rather than whole lectures or courses - focused on specific topics, in the form of split-screen presentations, in which the video of the presenter is in one window and the educational material synchronised and presented in a second window. GEOSET also links to other major sources of educational material such as at the Vega archive site and the Royal Society. Users can filter by age suitability, type of video, and subject.

An interactive, multimedia website created by physicists at the University of New South Wales, which presents a series of animated guides to Einstein’s theory of special relativity. The guides take the form of six modules which proceed from a discussion of Galilean relativity and mechanics, through a look at Einstein’s theory itself, a consideration of time dilation and a look at the implications of the theory called ‘Beyond Relativity’. Each animation comes with detailed background notes, giving more complete explanations.

The brainchild of a retired physics teacher, the Cassiopeia Project aims to make high definition science videos freely available to ‘anyone who wants them’. The videos are broadly divided into subject areas, including Biology, Chemistry and Physics., with a particular focus on space science and astronomy, and include a series of videos on relativity. The videos are all self-contained but also work as a narrative sequence and are embedded in a ‘science fiction/romance’ story, intended to give structure to the collection and to help teachers and educators with lesson planning. The videos can be downloaded as M4V files, in HD or standard definition and users are free to edit and repurpose the clips as they see fit. Full transcripts of each episode are also available to download.
