Ever been confused by all the letters and squiggles used by scientists? Sixty Symbols is a collection of videos about physics and astronomy presented by experts from the University of Nottingham. Not intended as a reference work, the films are just fun chats with men and women who love their subject and know a lot about it! It’s worth noting many symbols have multiple uses across scientific disciplines, so they are sometimes tackled from an unexpected viewpoint. Click on "gamma" and you’ll find a professor of physics talking about cricket balls... Click on "rho" and paperclips are being stuffed into coffee cups. And sometimes when there’s no symbol to tell a story (like Schrödinger’s cat), they just make one up! Suggestions for further additions are welcomed.

Calling itself the ‘first scientific video journal’, Journal of Visualized Experiments (JoVE) is a peer-reviewed, online journal devoted to the publication of biological, medical, chemical and physical research in a video format. Video articles are organised into sections on Neuroscience, Immunity & Infection, Clinical & Translational Medicine, Bioengineering, Applied Physics. JoVE is devoted to publishing scientific research in a visual format in order to introduce clarity, dynamism and efficiency into the scientific process. Many of the videos require a subscription in order to be able to see beyond a brief preview.

To celebrate the range of scientific issues discussed during the Royal Society’s 350th anniversary year the Science Sees Further website has been set up. It offers all those interested in science an opportunity to look at the key scientific issues of today, and those of tomorrow. The site is arranged in 12 chapters based on the subjects of the year’s discussion meetings - the ageing process, biological diversity, cognition and computation, cultural diversity, extra-terrestrial life, geoengineering, global sustainability, greenhouse gases, new vaccines, stem cell biology, uncertainty in science, and web science. Each section comprises an attractive subject summary (authored by the meeting organisers), short historical context using material from the Society’s Centre for History of Science, as well as interactive audio and video material.

The website accompanying the BBC Radio 4 series In Our Time, in which Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the history of ideas, has been redesigned, and the Archive section now makes every episode broadcast since the series began in 1998 available to listen to again via RealPlayer. Programmes are searchable by title, genre (culture, history, philosophy, religion, science) and by era, from prehistoric to 20th century. Recent programmes are available as podcasts, and an e-mail newsletter gives Melvyn Bragg’s personal insight into the latest programme.

Devoted to the art of the steadicam, a stabilising rig introduced in the 1970s to allow shots photographed with a hand-held camera to appear as smooth as if they were filmed on a dolly. It focuses in particular on the efforts of the camera operators and their crews. Starting with extracts from 1976 right up to the present day, along with all the relevant clips (there are hundreds) displayed in full, there are commentaries from those who photographed the shots. The site can be searched by production title (including feature films, television shows, commercials and music videos), date and by the name of the camera operator.

An imaginative and extensive use of animations to visualise concepts concerning acoustics and vibration, constructed by Dr. Dan Russell using Mathematica software. The animations and other, static diagrams accompany informative texts illustrating such topics as Basic Wave Phenomena, Sound Waves and Radiation from Sources, Room Acoustics, Vibrational Modes of Continuous Systems, Optical Ray Tracing, and Matter Rays. Among the delights are the acoustics of baseball bats, and vibrational modes of an electric and acoustic guitar. The site also contains GIF animations and brief movies (using RealPlayer), including the celebrated Tacoma Narrows Bridge, "when engineers don’t account for resonance when designing structures". Guidance on permitted use of the clips for educational purposes is given on the web site.
