This American site, which is sponsored by the National Science Foundation, presents the latest videos on science, engineering, technology and mathematics. The material is aggregated from universities, colleges and scientific bodies, as well as the National Science Foundation itself. The videos are organised into ten main topics, from Astronomy and Space to Technology and Engineering. A Series page presents a range of series on a broad range of scientific topics. Some of the series are from the National Science Foundation, others from other scientific bodies, universities and research institutions; all entries are accompanied by useful introductions and summaries.

Ed Prosser is a multi-media producer with a background in science. This site features his work, in audio and video, including films made for the Ri, podcasts and audio documentaries. Prosser also provides links to and comments on other science videos which he finds interesting. One of the most useful aspects of the site, are the extensive production notes which accompany each film. These notes explore the challenges of making science films. Prosser looks at the technical aspects of filmmaking: how to integrate interviews, animation, slides, what equipment to use etc. but also explores the challenges of how to clearly present complex scientific ideas to a YouTube audience without sacrificing accuracy.

This site presents videos of academics from various disciplines, talking to camera about their interests and research. The aim is to communicate research in a way that is accessible to the wider public. The videos are professionally made and the participants present their ideas clearly in an unadorned, simple way, largely relying on direct, to camera communication, without any other audiovisual aids. Users can narrow their search by four broad categories: Arts and Humanities, Formal Sciences, Natural Sciences, Professional and Social Sciences. Amongst the disciplines currently represented on the site are Architecture, History, Philosophy, Sociology, Finance, Fashion, Film Studies, Management and Planetary Sciences. All content is free to view but there are various Licensing options for use of the content beyond the platform. A simple idea, well executed.

This website delivers thousands of free academic and educational multimedia content, including videos, animations and simulations. The site’s strengths are in Mathematics and the Sciences, but also cover History, Economics, English and Religion. The videos on the site are aggregated from other American educational collections (including the Khan Academy) and arranged by broad subject areas which are then subdivided into narrower concepts, and laid out on the page in a logical and easy to follow screen display. It is slightly frustrating that there is little contextual information associated with the videos, in the form of descriptions, contributors, and other useful metadata. It is also not possible to click through to view the video on its original home page. Nonetheless, worth visiting for the range and quality of material available.

The Perimeter Institute is a centre for scientific research, training and educational outreach in foundational theoretical physics, based in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Since 2007 the institute has been creating video recordings of its seminars, conference talks and outreach events and making them freely available on its website. Each video is accompanied by an abstract and classified according to its speaker and research area. Subjects include condensed matter, quantum fields and strings, mathematical physics, quantum gravity and cosmology. The seminars are also available to view on the PIRSA or Perimeter Institute Recorded Seminar Archive: a ‘a permanent, free, searchable, and citable archive of recorded seminars’. The seminars here are available in Windows Media, Flash, MP3, and PDF of slide or presentation materials.

A website featuring short films about science, made by schoolchildren, teachers, scientists, students and researchers. The project was originally inspired by a desire to explore what ‘public service children’s media’ might look like in the Web 2.0 world, together with a sense that science and engineering lend themselves particularly well to practical, accessible filmmaking. The films can be searched according to eight broad subjects (Biology, Careers, Chemistry, Earth Sciences & Environment, Engineering, Maths, Miscellaneous and Physics) and by Type (Documentary, Experiment, Explanation etc.). The site is still fully available but appears not to have been updated since 2012.

GEOSET (Global Educational Outreach for Science, Engineering and Technology) is a freely accessible, searchable internet gateway to a selection of SET and related educational materials. Most of the videos take the form of ‘concept modules’ - rather than whole lectures or courses - focused on specific topics, in the form of split-screen presentations, in which the video of the presenter is in one window and the educational material synchronised and presented in a second window. GEOSET also links to other major sources of educational material such as at the Vega archive site and the Royal Society. Users can filter by age suitability, type of video, and subject.
