Formerly an excellent guide to web sites on the humanities, with helpful but not overwordy site descriptions and useful background material. It also integrates search results with results from the database of the North West Film Archive, an innovative and very welcome initative. NB Intute closed in July 2011 and the site has now been archived. No further resources are being added and no changes are being made to existing content, so the resource will increasingly become less useful and reliable.

This site advertises itself as the "definitive directory of UK TV advert soundtracks". This comprehensive listing of over 2000 pieces of music used in recent television advertising can be searched chronologically (only as far back as 1996 though), by song title, artist as well as company or specific ad campaign. The site is linked throughout to Amazon.co.uk which often includes thirty-second clips in Real and Windows Media Player formats. There is also a forum. Inactive since November 29 2008.

Findsounds.com is a search engine for sounds. Sounds can be accessed via a simple search or by searching from sound types. Audio files can be downloaded as AIFF, AU and WAVE. Sound types are divided into various categories, including Birds, Animals, Mayhem and Nature. The sound files within these are extensive: for example, there are eight volcano sound files, twenty-five sound files of didgeridoos, eleven examples of thunder, and five kookaburra recordings. All searches link the user to audio files hosted by external websites.

This video subscription service offers very high quality QuickTime movies. The very high resolution samples on this site are of quite spectacular quality, but will require at 150mbs of free memory to play or the computer will crash. A few clips are available free, but otherwise a subscription is required. The movies are organised by genre (people, places, music, events etc.).

Part of the Internet Archive, which also covers archived moving images (The Internet Moving Images Archive), audio and software, the Wayback Machine holds cached versions of thousands of websites and billions of pages, allowing users to look at sites that are no longer available or at earlier versions of ones that are still around. An invaluable resource that, due to the gigantic nature of the holdings, is slightly hampered by the fact that no list of the holdings can be easily provided. This means inevitably that correct recall of the URL in question is necessary, or failing that, searching for it on the web first.
