This website (which is available in English and Polish) features the work of three of the 20th century’s pre-eminent Polish composers: Henryk Górecki, Witold Lutosławski and Krzysztof Penderecki. Over three hundred pieces of music are available to stream, the majority of which have been digitised from the archives of Polish Radio by the Polish National Audiovisual Institute (NiNA). The site is nicely designed and easy to browse: users can filter their searches by year, genre, form and category in a thoughtfully designed search field. All the pieces are accompanied by detailed production credits, extended descriptions and other contextual information, including the composers’ own opinions about the music, as well as the opinions of critics and musicologists. The quality of the recording is generally very high, but recordings of lower quality have also been made available, due to their historical value.

The extensive record collection of Radio 1 DJ John Peel forms the bedrock of this resource. Users can browse along the virtual shelves to view Peel’s LP collection, which is currently in the process of being catalogued. A separate section features the DJ’s singles collection - currently a small selection of ‘B’ is complete, along with links to the music where available. The vastness of the collection means that this is very much a work in progress at the moment. The site also features links to videos featuring interviews with a number of Peel’s favourite bands and musicians. In 2014, in conjunction with The Space, the John Peel Archive relaunched its Record Box Project, in which key figures involved in music select tracks from the Peel collection and present them as a curated collection exploring the cultural context of the music, along with their own memories and experiences.

Europeana Sounds was a project co-funded by the European Commission and the Europeana Sounds consortium. The project’s aim is to open up access to Europee’s shared sonic heritage, and celebrating the diversity and creativity of sound in everyday life. Throughout the lifespan of the project, the website will be a space dedicated to listening, discussion and discovery. It aims to feature regular contributions from all of the institutions involved in the project, from Athens to the Isle of Skye. Currently users can explore six different categories on the website: Oral Memories and the Spoken Word; Languages and Dialect; World and Traditional Music; Soundscapes and Natural Sounds; Classical Music; and Popular Music. Each category has its own page with information about what users can expect to hear as the project progresses, together with a selection of representative samples.

Series of podcasts created by a sound designer and musician who goes by the alias SFX Ninja. Each episode addresses the process involved in the recording of sound and the creation of sound effects, offering advice on, for example, on how to record bird sounds and create chirping sound effects. Other episodes address ‘historical’ sound effects, video games and kitchen noises: others look at the challenges involved in recording bathroom noises and insect sounds. The podcasts also make an effort to contextualise the process, and include information about the history of sound effects and recording technology, as well as addressing the mixture of technological and creative skill needed. The overall tone is chatty and anecdotal but backed up by real expertise. Each podcast includes free sound clips and effects to download.

A portal which helps people to ‘find great podcasts’. Curated by Max Temkin and Veronica Corzo-Duchardt, the site presents a selection of mainly American podcasts, arranged under a number of topics, including Tech, Science & Education, Politics & Econ and Storytelling. An Interview page features transcripts of question and answer sessions with podcasters, writers, designers and other culturally-aware, creative people, who talk about their favourite podcasts, and why (and how) they like listening to them. The site works well because its focus is fairly narrow: the emphasis is on curation, and presenting a carefully selected range of interesting podcasts, rather than a comprehensive but overwhelming list of resources.
