A podcast which explores the ways in which people listen to sounds, and the inventions, discoveries, possibilities and ideas around sound. Written and produced by Tim Hinman, the content is original and thought-provoking. This entertaining and informative site attempts to categorise, index and contextualise tropes - storytelling devices or conventions - as they appear in television programmes, films, games, music, literature, and other media. There are four main indexes: Genre Tropes, Media Tropes, Narrative Tropes and Topical Tropes. Each of these main headings is further subdivided so that under the Narrative Trope heading, for example, one can explore Characters, Conflict, Motifs Settings etc., down to a microscopic level of detail. The site began in 2004, primarily focusing on the television series ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’. Since then it has vastly expanded its scope to cover most types of media. Users can explore by series or trope. Each series entry features a list of tropes associated with that series, whereas users exploring by trope (British Teeth, for example) will find a list of that trope’s appearance in television, film, literature etc. Although the approach is often humorous the site represents an invaluable resource for anyone interested in exploring or analysing the building blocks of storytelling and narrative construction, in any medium, but particularly television.

This freely available resource presents the materials and documentation associated with Siobhan Davies’ choreographies as a single online collection. Of particular interest are digitised videos of the filmed records of choreographies in rehearsal and in the studio. The search function allows the user to filter by media, (still, moving image, audio etc.), dance work, dance artist, musician and designer. The resource is the result of a collaboration between Coventry University and Siobhan Davies Dance which was funded by the AHRC. All the moving image content is streamed in flash video format

Site dedicated to electronic musician and composer Daphne Oram. Oram, who co-founded the BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop, devoted her career, after she left the BBC in 1959, to the development of her own Oramics system, a pioneering form of sound sythesis based on the use of 35 mm film strips which are drawn or written on by the musician and generate sounds when passed over photo-electric cells. This site features biographical details along with information about how to access the Daphne Oram collection which is held in Goldsmith’s University’s special collections and includes papers relating to Oram’s work at the BBC, personal documents, papers relating to the Oramics system, photographs, musical scores, computer code and sound recordings. A small but fascinating selection of sound clips features Oram introducing some of her own pieces including the soundtrack to the Geoffrey Jones film ‘Snow’ which was made for British Transport Films in 1963.

The New York Public Library produces a range of interesting resources relating to its own services, as well as a number of podcasts about books and culture in general. The Librarian is In is a lively podcast presented by staff of the New York Public Library. Styling itself the ‘podcast about books, culture and what to read next’ each episode does exactly that, adding information about issues affecting librarians and information professionals. Amongst the other other offerings are the Louis Armstrong Jazz Oral History Project and interviews with writers like Michael Chabon, Richard Price, Wole Soyinka, Art Spiegelman and Tom Wolfe.

This nicely designed website is the result of a participatory media project by sixth form students at Walsall Academy in Bloxwich, a small town in the West Midlands. Featuring interviews with local residents who recount their memories of growing up in the area, one of the interviewees is Noddy Holder of Slade, who talks about his childhood, as well as the links between the industry of the Black Country and the development of heavy metal music.

It delivers more than 50,000 video titles spanning all academic subject areas including anthropology, business, counselling, film, health, history, music, and more. More than 12,000 titles are exclusive to Alexander Street. From Jan 1 2016, it includes the new “AVON-to-Own” feature, where subscribing libraries receive perpetual rights to videos they select at the end of each annual term commensurate with the amount of the subscription, using an entire year of usage data to support selections.
