    This American resource, linked to the Discovery Channel, offers subscribers video animations on medical topics including such subjects as Acne, AIDS, Cataracts, Diabetes, Epilepsy, Infertility , Menopause, Root Canal and many others. The site offers very good video animations which are provided for both Windows Media Player and Real and are available for all connections, along with text and slides, as well as useful links to related websites.

    The Mayo Clinic (located across three sites in the USA) is a charitable, not-for-profit medical organisation, and the website contains Grand Rounds audio and video presentations selected for their educational value and topic interest. Recent topics include microbes and obesity, cognitive aging and presymptomatic Alzheimer’s disease, and selection of articifical heart valves. New presentations are added regularly and details are available by subscribing to the Physician Update e-mail.

    Produced by the University of Sheffield’s School of Health and Related Research (ScHARR), this site shows the results of a programme funded by the Wellcome Trust, which produced an oral history of general practice in Paisley, c.1950-1990. Between 1998 and 2001 thirty-one general practitioners (GPs) were interviewed about their lives. The site features a number of mp3 audio files giving extracts from the interviews, as well as articles based on the research.

    The site began by concentrating on explaining the holdings and workings of the BBC Archives, using short videos, accompanied by written text, and frequently-asked questions. Separate pages cover different aspects of the Archive and issues relating to them - television, sound, written, photographic, contributor rights, preservation and cataloguing, test cards and ceefax, the bits between programmes, and the BBC Heritage Collection. Since 2008 the website has diversified to include themed collections of archival radio and TV programmes (streamed complete or as extracts), documents and photographs. Topics currently featured include the Holocaust, Cuba and the Cold War, Doctor Who, WW2 relations with the USSR, Francis Bacon, the birth of the NHS, survivors of the Titanic, and working class life. Also available are the complete series of David Atttenborough’s 1956 ZOO QUEST FOR A DRAGON and MEN AND MONEY (1964), and the first BBC colour series from 1957, WHAT WE WORE, on the history of fashion. The front Archive page also links to other sections of the BBC website that host archival collections - IN OUR TIME, Radio 3 World Music Archive, WOMAN’S HOUR, World Service Archive, and clips from PLANET EARTH and AUTUMNWATCH in the Wildlife Finder.

    Gresham College, named after Sir Thomas Gresham, has been giving free lectures for some 400 years. Over 2,000 audio and/or video lectures given since 2001 are available on the site for free, on-demand streaming or download approximately two weeks after they have been given. The main subject areas are Art & Literature, Medical Science, Business, History, Law, Mathematics, Music, Politics, Religion, Science, and Unusual, which includes Media, Education, Climate Change and others. Results can also be filtered by subcategories. For example, there is a section on Film under the Arts & Literature category, and a section on Film Music under the Music category. The lectures last, on average, between 25 minutes and a little under an hour. They all have a good number of chapters and a fair amount of information is given on the site as well as transcripts and links to related materials.
    The content can also be browsed via the tab Watch which contains four groupings: All Past Lectures, Series, Shorts and Short Series.

    The Vega Science Trust aims to support and promote the science and technology communities through the use of television and the Internet. It produces television programmes, many of which have been broadcast on BBC2’s Learning Zone. The site contains details of the programmes, searchable by series, subject and speaker, which can be ordered online. There are also video clips (in QuickTime and MPEG formats), complete audio lectures (using RealAudio), complete video lectures by Harry Kroto, and a useful set of links to science video and related sources.

    Several dozen Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs) made for staff and students at the University of Nottingham, lasting between 15 and 30 minutes, can be accessed here. Topics can be searched by a detailed list and include: Anatomy, Genetics, Maths, Midwifery, Pharmacology, Philosophy, Veterinary Science. Although the site states that it has not been updated since 2008 items are in fact still being added. Although spartan in appearance it remains an easy-to-use and fascinating resource.
