    This archive, hosted by Columbia University, offered access to the complete range of free content developed for Fathom by its member institutions. Fathom was made up of 14 institutions, including LSE, the British Library, Cambridge University, Chicago University, and offered interviews, articles, performances, exhibits and free online seminars. The bias was mainly towards science, but journalism, history, politics and other areas were also covered. Inactive since August 2012 the site shows the following message: "This site is not longer being developed or maintained, but was part of a series of early and experimental online learning projects. Material here continues at present to be available to members of the Columbia community, but there may be some segments of the site that no longer work as initially intended."

    Major film distribution library covering medicine, sociology, arts, general education, anthropology and other areas of political and social interest. Concord distributes not only the Concord library but also distributes films and programmes for over 350 other bodies, including the Arts Council of Great Britain and Graves Audiovisual Library. Its attractively designed new website divides the collection into eleven categories, with descriptions and booking details for each title. The categories are Addictions, the Arts, Children, Community Topics, Counselling & Mental Health, Death & Bereavement, Education, International, Medical & Health, Social Welfare, Women & Gender Issues. Many of their resources are available to buy and rent online via vimeo.

    Previously known as Omni, this is an essential gateway to academic and related web-sites on all aspects of medicine including bio-medical research. NB Intute closed in July 2011 and the site has now been archived. No further resources are being added and no changes are being made to existing content, so the resource will increasingly become less useful and reliable.

    The BMA Library has one of the largest collections of medical films and videos in the UK, with material dating from 1924 to the mid-1980s. Film material from 1950 onwards and most of the video collections is available for loan. Most subject areas in medicine are covered, with the majority being most suitable for medical students and doctors. The audiovisual collection can be searched on the online catalogue.

    Compiled by a dermatologist who is also a film buff, this site offers a wholly new way of looking at the history of cinema, through its concentration on skin complaints. Learn about Jennifer Lopez’s chicken pox scars, Marilyn Monroe’s mole, Patrick Stewart’s hair loss, James Cagney’s acne scars and how skin disease is used as a cinematic shorthand for evil, and the few films (The Elephant Man, Mask, Man Without a Face) where skin disease is depicted realistically and sympathetically.
