This database was created by two Berliners to document and catalogue atrocities in the Syrian war. As of March 2017 the site has records of nearly 4,000 separate incidents, accompanied by video footage and indexed according to ten categories, including Violation of children’s rights; Use of illegal weapons; Unlawful attacks and Alleged Civilian Casualties from Russian attacks. The resource is intended for journalists, researcher, human rights organisations, activists and any group with an interest in the conflict. It is also intended to function as a repository of evidence for future historians. The United Nations, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, as well as lawyers and activists around the world, have all made use of the archive. This article on the Deutsche Welle website, features comments from the site’s creators, who talk about their reasons for making it, along with some of the problems they have faced, particularly the difficulties of verifying sources in a war zone

Please note: the nature of this resource means that some of the footage is extremely graphic.

This American film studies resource describes itself as a ‘public media archive and fair use advocacy network that supports the transformative reuse of media in scholarly and creative contexts’. Critical Commons encourages users to upload footage but differs from sites such as YouTube in that it accepts only content which is accompanied by a commentary or brief essay which places the media in a critical context in order to give it an educational value. The site makes use of ‘fair use: a concept in American law which allows the use of copyrighted material without having to notify or contact the rights holder, so long as the use is for limited and ‘transformative’ purposes. Useful for teachers and students in film and media studies.

This site archives the feminist film fanzine, or ‘video chainletter’ created by Miranda July and a network of female filmmakers during the 1990s and early 2000s. Originally called ‘Big Miss Movieola’, then changed to ‘Joanie4Jackie’ following legal threats from the owner of the Movieola brand, the project began when July issued a ‘challenge and a promise’ to other filmmakers: ‘Lady, you send me your movie and I’ll send you the latest Big Miss Moviola Chainletter Tape’. In addition to digitised versions of the chainletter tapes themselves, the site features extensive contextual material, including posters, letters, press, documentary films about the project and interviews with participants.

This site is curated by Channel 4 News and features footage shot by Syrian filmmaker Wa’ad al Kateab during the relentless aerial bombardment of Eastern Aleppo. Aid workers and foreign journalists are unable to gain access to this part of the besieged city and it is left to local people, often citizen journalists, to bear witness to what is happening. The site features a timeline, beginning in July 2012, and offers a chronology of the conflict so far, interspersed with film showing the daily lives of Aleppo’s citizens. The stories documenting the suffering of the city’s children are particularly harrowing.

This site presents a range of resources relating to a five year project (2013-2018) to research and document the history of British television broadcast technology from 1960 onwards. Led by Professor John Ellis of Royal Holloway, University of London, the European Research Council-funded project explores the ways in which the look and sound of the television programmes of the 1960s, 70s, 80s and 90s was directly affected by the technology used in the making of them.
One of the project’s most original and inspiring ideas is to reunite industry veterans with examples of the technologies they once used and film them working with the old equipment. The resulting reconstructions have been turned into a series of videos which provide contextual material to stand alongside original archive footage and give a valuable insight into the teamwork and adaptability of the men and women working in what Professor Ellis calls ‘the heroic age of television’ . The videos are available on this site as well as the project’s YouTube channel and are available for reuse under a Creative Commons Attribution Licence. Reconstructions include, 16mmm filming preparation, which shows how a typical television film crew went about the task of filming footage, 16mm editing cutting technique, which shows how television film editors organised and assembled raw footage (rushes) using a variety of editing machines and techniques 16mm film processing, in which laboratory staff demonstrate the various skills and methods used to process exposed negative films.
