Produced by the University of Virginia’s Department of Computer Science, this celebrated site uses data from the Internet Movie Database to show the degrees of separation between any screen actor and Kevin Bacon. The site is a demonstration of some fundamental principles of computer science and mathematics, as well as being an illuminating illustration of the spread of world cinema, and great fun. So, for example, Mary Pickford has a Bacon number of 3: she was in Hollywood Hobbies (1939) with William ‘Billy’ Benedict, William ‘Billy’ Benedict was in Farewell, My Lovely (1975) with Sylvester Stallone, Sylvester Stallone was in Dolan’s Cadillac (2002) with Kevin Bacon.

Launched in 2006, the Open University's OpenLearn website has grown to provide over 8000 study hours of video, audio and print materials from OU courses. It is not necessary to be a student of the OU to use the resources. OpenLearn does not of itself grant degrees or award credits, but there is a link for those who wish to consider formal Study at the OU. LearningSpace units are divided up into the subject areas of Body & Mind, Education, History & the Arts, Languages, Money & Management, Nature & Environment, Science, Maths & Technology, and Society. There is substantial video content included (Flash).
In 2010 OpenLearn merged with open2.net, the site that supported OU-produced BBC general programming. So now OpenLearn also gives access to topical and interactive content, from expert blogs, to videos and games that enrich these programmes.

Gresham College, named after Sir Thomas Gresham, has been giving free lectures for some 400 years. Over 2,000 audio and/or video lectures given since 2001 are available on the site for free, on-demand streaming or download approximately two weeks after they have been given. The main subject areas are Art & Literature, Medical Science, Business, History, Law, Mathematics, Music, Politics, Religion, Science, and Unusual, which includes Media, Education, Climate Change and others. Results can also be filtered by subcategories. For example, there is a section on Film under the Arts & Literature category, and a section on Film Music under the Music category. The lectures last, on average, between 25 minutes and a little under an hour. They all have a good number of chapters and a fair amount of information is given on the site as well as transcripts and links to related materials.
The content can also be browsed via the tab Watch which contains four groupings: All Past Lectures, Series, Shorts and Short Series.

A service funded, until July 2011, by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) for accessing Internet resources for learning and teaching communities in the UK. Organised into 19 gateways covering Science and Technology, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Health and Life Sciences. Previously known as the Resource Discovery Network. NB Intute closed in July 2011 and the site has now been archived. No further resources are being added and no changes are being made to existing content, so the resource will increasingly become less useful and reliable.

The Vega Science Trust aims to support and promote the science and technology communities through the use of television and the Internet. It produces television programmes, many of which have been broadcast on BBC2’s Learning Zone. The site contains details of the programmes, searchable by series, subject and speaker, which can be ordered online. There are also video clips (in QuickTime and MPEG formats), complete audio lectures (using RealAudio), complete video lectures by Harry Kroto, and a useful set of links to science video and related sources.
