There are nearly 200 of these podcasts available to listen to or download (in mp3 format). Each episode lasts between ten and twenty-five minutes and simply consists of an audio version of the person’s entry from the ODNB. The eclectic selection covers writers, politicians, scientists, entertainers and sportsmen and women, as well as ‘Wartime lives’, ‘Criminal lives’ and ‘One-offs’. The selection covers the very well-known - from the Emperor Hadrian and Boudicca, to Captain Scott, J.R.R. Tolkien and Princess Diana. The less obvious choices possibly provide more interesting fare: Nora Joyce, Humphrey Lyttelton, Angela Carter and Charles Darwin’s daughter Anne, to name just a few. Other names are not well-known but are remarkable in some way, such as the biographies of Herbert Burden, a World War I soldier, executed for desertion and Hannah Snell, an 18th century British woman who disguised herself as a man and became a soldier.

William Faulkner was writer-in-residence at the University of Virginia in 1957 and 1958. During those two years he gave two addresses, read from eight of his works, and answered over 1400 questions from audiences made up of various groups, ranging from UVA students and faculty members to interested local citizens. These sessions were recorded on reel-to-reel tape recorder and now over 28 hours worth of material from the archives have been digitised, catalogued, transcribed and made freely available in QuickTime format.
Users can browse or search the collection by keyword but anyone seriously interested in exploring the collection will benefit from reading the contextual essay which gives a detailed account of Faulkner’s residence at UVA, the background to the recordings, information on audio quality (which is understandably uneven given the limitations of the technology of the time), transcription methodology, links to essays, photographs, cartoons and a selection of letters from the Faulkner collections at the UVA library.

A curated Clips section presents a selection of highlights from the collection, consisting of over 230 of Faulkner’s responses to audience questions. Most of the questions refer specifically to the novels (nicely illustrated with images of first editions), but Faulkner also has interesting things to say about his career (including writing in Hollywood for Howard Hawks), his opinions of other writers, including James Joyce, Albert Camus and J.D. Salinger and his views on the South and the Civil Rights Movement.

This portal, hosted by the University of Oxford, and curated by members of the Faculty of English Language and Literature, makes available thousands of learning resources, all in the public domain or under a Creative Commons licence. The selection of writers is not comprehensive: just over 40 authors are represented, including the mainstays of the Western literary canon: Austen, Dickens, Shakespeare, Milton, Blake, Swift, Joyce etc.; but more neglected writers are there too, including 18th century labouring-class poets Stephen Duck and Mary Leapor. What the resource lacks in breadth it makes up for in the richness of resources which are available, including podcasts, videos of talks and lectures, downloadable electronic texts and ebooks, and contextual essays by members of the English Faculty. A selection of different approaches to literature are suggested by a Themes page which covers Notions of Authorship, Genre and Feminist Approaches to Literature" among others.

Irish writer Frank Delaney presents this series which aims to take the listener line-by-line through James Joyce’s Ulysses. Each podcast is between five and fifteen minutes long and features Delaney reading and analysing a passage from the novel. Delaney is in no hurry: at his current rate it will take over twenty years to get to the final lines of the soliloquy by Molly Bloom which ends the book. However, Delaney’s leisurely yet ambitious approach has much to recommend it. He is a genial guide, offering lucid and insightful views into Joyce’s notoriously allusive and experimental novel and his expressive and frequent quotation from the text emphasises the fact that the novel needs to be heard as well as read.

The official website of the Nobel Prize includes audio and video material of interviews, lectures and speeches by Nobel Laureates as well as biographical information, transcripts of speeches and links to other resources. The audiovisual material is scattered across the site rather than organised as a single resource, which can be frustrating, but there are riches here if one takes the time to seek them out. Noteworthy examples include this excerpt from Polish poet Czeslaw Milosz’s Nobel lecture, from December 1980, and a video recording of Martin Luther King’s acceptance speech on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

This resource from the University of Warwick was created in 2012 to celebrate the bicentenary of the birth of Charles Dickens. The site features short films, podcasts, and articles as well as a 45 minute documentary. Led by Professor John Mee, the videos and podcasts explore various aspects of the novelist’s work, covering Dickens and crime, Dickens in relation to his philanthropic works, as well as wider aspects of Victorian society. Writer Andrew Davies contributes to the discussion on screen adaptation, talking here with Professor Gary Watt about the cinematic nature of Dickens as well as the challenges he has faced in adapting the works for the screen. Aspects of certain novels, including Bleak House, Great Expectations and Little Dorrit are explored in greater depth in individual podcasts. The discussion on Our Mutual Friend, for example, looks at the destabilising effect of the novel’s dark humour and its presentation of human beings as commodities to be bartered and traded.
