    The video channel of the US-based online culture and current affairs magazine Slate. The magazine has a left-leaning bias and its tone is witty, irreverent and informative. For example, the video on FX/digital compositing explains how hidden special effects work in films in a very entertaining way. The Podcasts cover similar ground.

    At the core of this website devoted to films of the silent era is the Progressive Silent Film List, which is a growing collection of information on more than 22,500 silent and sound films produced from 1888 through to the end of 1929. The list can be accessed via a search of actors, actresses, producers and directors and also production and distribution companies. Some of the film entries are accompanied by clips, such as this excerpt from the 1913 Thanhouser production of Cymbeline. The site also includes listings and reviews of silent films available on video and DVD, a news section, film reviews and articles, book reviews, details of lost films as well as information on silent era films previously thought lost, but now found.

    A collection of live video recordings made of stage performances, mostly in London. Since the closure of the Theatre Museum in August 2007, these materials have been held at the Victoria & Albert Museum and are now available for viewing at their Olympia premises. The listing given on the site links to details of each production, including length, date of performance, credits, number of cameras used in the recording and usually a brief description. The material cannot be viewed elsewhere.

    Harlan Ellison has been a controversial figure on the SF literary scene since the 1950s. Made to promote a documentary about his life and work, this site includes a trailer for the film as well as movies of Ellison performing his own works and a long video of a Q&A session that followed one of the film’s screenings in LA.

    Shotlist, part of the EBS Trust, produces subject-specific video materials for teaching and research, which are distributed at minimal cost to all UK education establishments, who are also able to purchase sub-masters from which they are permitted to copy, re-edit, and re-format the programmes according to their own needs. The site gives descriptions of the videos by subject: Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Engineering, Information Systems, Practical Maths, Psychology, and a series of lectures on Irish literary figures including Joyce, Wilde and Yeats.
