Interactive website created by the Ministry of Justice in which users are invited to consider the evidence in reconstructions of real-life criminal cases before deciding what sentence to pass. Cases include Mugging, Burglary, Threatening Behaviour and Manslaughter. A series of videos features members of the legal professions, who explain their roles, before introducing the facts of the offence, considering aggravating and mitigating factors and then explaining how sentences are handed out. Users select a sentence before finding out what punishment the defendant received in reality. The aim of the site is to explain sentencing to the public: according to the Ministry of Justice, people think that sentencing is too lenient, but analysis of the website’s users shows that "for every three users who enter the site thinking sentencing’s too lenient, two leave it thinking it’s about right".

At the end of 2009 this brilliant site designed to teach skills to BBC journalists was opened to public access in the UK. Using hundreds of video and audio examples alongside interactive modules, the site provides masterclasses covering craft skills, law, and ethics & values. There is also an active discussion forum, glossary, and currently a section on covering the general election. It is intended to make the site available by subscription outside the UK. Part of the BBC Academy, see also the separate entry for the sister site, BBC College of Production.

A virtual curator presents a series of short videos on key aspects of the Magna Carta, and there are audio recordings of talks given during the exhibition including Professor A.C Grayling on British ‘liberty; Trevor Phillips on equality and human rights in modern Britain; Ken Livingstone in a panel debate about fundamental freedoms in a world of climate change; Nigel Sadler on the Minutes of the Committee for Abolition of the Slave Trade; Polly Toynbee chairing a debate on women’s rights in the 21st century; ; Professor Nicholas Vincent on the Magna Carta; Shami Chakrabarti of Liberty on the dangers of quick-fix legislation; as well as talks on the Human Rights Act 1998, The Wolfenden Report and Paine’s Rights of Man.
