This website has Flash animations of the phonetic sounds of English, German and Spanish. The result of a project by the University of Iowa, it is aimed at students of linguistics, phonetics and languages. Each consonant and vowel has an animated articulatory digram, showing a cross-section of how the human tongue, teeth and lips move when speaking, accompanied by audio of the sound itself. Playing alongside the animations are videos showing a person speaking a selection of words, in order to put the sounds in context. There is also an explanatory diagram of the articulatory anatomy, contributing to a well-designed, useful resource.

This site is the result of a joint project by the Swedish Film Institute and the Swedish National Library. The selection of digitised (in high quality MPEG2 files) non-fiction films includes amateur films, commercials, public information films, political broadcasts, travelogues and newsreels. The aim is to preserve and make freely available a curated selection of films which reflect a century of changes in Swedish society. The site was launched in 2011 with 300 films and as of May 2013 there are now 800 viewable items. Each film comes with a short synopsis and production credits and, in many cases, longer contextual essays. Apart from an overview of the project which is in English, the entire site is in Swedish and none of the films has subtitles. Nonetheless, the site is highly recommended for film and newsreel historians and anyone interested in the recent history of Sweden.

In 2009 the contents of 597 Hungarian newsreels, spanning the years 1931 to 1945, were made available online in their entirety to the public by the Hungarian National Audiovisual Archive (NAVA). In addition to this a smaller collection of 26 pieces consisting of silent newsreels from between 1914 and 1924 was added to the site in 2010. The quality of the digitised film is extremely high, even for the earlier material, as in this clip from November 1919 showing Admiral Horthy entering Budapest. The collection has an introduction in English, as well as a News in English section, but the rest of the resource is in Hungarian. Nonetheless, given the quality of the digitised images, together with a stylish design, a clear layout, and dropdown menus which give a list of search terms, covering personalities, locations and themes, the determined researcher will find his or her time spent browsing this resource well rewarded.

The Filmoteca Espanola’s new online platform streams various short films, documentaries and feature films from its archives. The newsreel NO-DO (Noticiarios y Documentales) which ran from 1943 - 1981 has recently been made available to view in its entirety on the site, providing a fascinating and invaluable record of life in Spain under General Franco, albeit one viewed through the prism of a series which was closely linked with the dictator’s regime. Many of the newsreels are pure propaganda, showing Franco opening public works, giving speeches and the like but much of the material also focuses on everyday Spanish life, covering sports, entertainment, fashion, scientific and technological advances as well as an "Instantaneas Mundiales" slot which provides a brief round-up of international news. Digitised programme sheets are linked to the videos and viewable in pdf format. Although some of the original audio commentaries have been lost, the standard of digitisation of the newsreels themselves is uniformly excellent, making this an essential resource for students of modern Spanish history and newsreel historians alike.

A useful website on all aspects of Polish culture both contemporary and historical. Articles and reviews cover literature, film, music, visual arts and theatre. This piece on Polish Cinema of the Silent Era gives an overview of early film practitioners in Poland; another piece considers the mind-boggling difficulties and the human cost of translating Finnegans Wake into Polish, one of only ten languages to have its own version of Joyce’s magnum opus.

The result of a joint project between the East Anglian Film Archive and Rouen based Pôle Image Haute-Normandie (PIHN), this Anglo-French collaboration presents hundreds of short films, and excerpts from longer films, from East Anglia and Upper Normandy, tracing the social and cultural history of the two regions in film. Many of the clips are accompanied by informative commentaries which were recorded especially for the project. Users should be aware that the films are not always presented in their original form: a piece about the fishing industry edits together two films, one from the 1930s and one from the 1950s and many of the films which would have originally been silent are accompanied by music as well as a voiceover. This caveat aside, the site, which can be searched by theme, location, year and keyword, is well presented and contains a wealth of fascinating material.
