This site - also known as CroMe - presents interviews with Croatian citizens who have experienced violent situations in the time period 1941 - 1995: a timespan covering World War II, the Yugoslavia period and the Balkan conflicts of the 90s. There are hundreds of interviews, ‘with a particular emphasis on women and marginalised ethnic minorities, as well as on victims, particularly former inmates and family members of killed and missing persons’. Users can narow their search by word (in the text summary or subtitle) theme, place, region. The site is available in an English version but most of the videos are, of course, in Croatian. There is, however, a small selection which feature searchable English subtitles.

Subtitled ‘Audiovisual Archive of the Francoist Repression’, this resource is the result of a collaborative project between the University of California at San Diego and various Spanish civic associations and human rights organisations. The core of the site is its collection of audiovisual recordings featuring the testimonies of fighters in, witnesses to, and victims of the Spanish Civil War. The resource is an attempt to counter the long-lasting effects of the so-called ‘Pact of Silence’ and the 1977 Amnesty Law which forbade any legal proceedings against perpetrators of human rights violations during the conflict. This page gives a detailed account of the aims of the project, including an explanation of why oral testimony is so important and the reasoning behind the project’s methodology. Recordings are high quality mp4 format and feature English and Spanish summaries. The majority of the interviews, however, are in Spanish only, without subtitles.

Europeana Sounds was a project co-funded by the European Commission and the Europeana Sounds consortium. The project’s aim is to open up access to Europee’s shared sonic heritage, and celebrating the diversity and creativity of sound in everyday life. Throughout the lifespan of the project, the website will be a space dedicated to listening, discussion and discovery. It aims to feature regular contributions from all of the institutions involved in the project, from Athens to the Isle of Skye. Currently users can explore six different categories on the website: Oral Memories and the Spoken Word; Languages and Dialect; World and Traditional Music; Soundscapes and Natural Sounds; Classical Music; and Popular Music. Each category has its own page with information about what users can expect to hear as the project progresses, together with a selection of representative samples.

Indiana University’s moving image archive is one of the largest and most comprehensive academic film collections in the world. Particularly noteworthy is its vast educational film collection, which includes career training films, U.S. Department of War productions, and more than 5,600 programmes produced by the National Educational Television (NET) network, the precursor to PBS. A selection of over 200 digitised films from the archive is now freely available to view online. With prominence given to the educational films, this resource provides a valuable window into the history and development of the use of moving image in education and covers a wide range of academic subjects including African American Studies, Anatomy and Physiology, Film Studies, Psychology and Teacher Education. The collection covers over eight decades, from 1909 to 1994, but the majority of films are from the 1950s, 60s and 70s. The standard of the clips is generally good but in many cases the deterioration of the original film is inevitably reflected in the quality of the digital object itself.
