The result of a joint project between the East Anglian Film Archive and Rouen based Pôle Image Haute-Normandie (PIHN), this Anglo-French collaboration presents hundreds of short films, and excerpts from longer films, from East Anglia and Upper Normandy, tracing the social and cultural history of the two regions in film. Many of the clips are accompanied by informative commentaries which were recorded especially for the project. Users should be aware that the films are not always presented in their original form: a piece about the fishing industry edits together two films, one from the 1930s and one from the 1950s and many of the films which would have originally been silent are accompanied by music as well as a voiceover. This caveat aside, the site, which can be searched by theme, location, year and keyword, is well presented and contains a wealth of fascinating material.

Open Culture boasts that it offers "the best free cultural & educational media on the web" and their site does a lot to live up to that claim, providing access to a large number of free educational resources, including online courses, language lessons, films and audiobooks. More than simply a list of links, Open Culture is divided into various sections which provide users with a variety of different approaches to navigating the web’s cultural and educational resources, such as a section called 125 Great Science Videos, which is a selective list of films, sub-divided into narrower scientific headings such as Technology & Mathematics, Environment, Geology and & Ecology, Physics, Astronomy & Space Travel etc. Another useful section of the site is a round-up of Intelligent YouTube Channels, which does a good job of sorting the wheat from the chaff and includes a list of universities which have collections of material on YouTube, offering brief comments on each site.

The ESRC-funded BSL Corpus Project project filmed 249 Deaf people from around the country in conversations with another Deaf person, answering interview questions, telling stories, and showing their signs for 102 key concepts. The aim was twofold: to to create a BSL “corpus“: a collection, on the internet, of video clips showing Deaf people using BSL, together with background information about the signers and written descriptions of the signing in ELAN; to carry out research using this collection into BSL grammar and vocabulary variation in BSL across the country, and how BSL is changing. Access to a selection of the interviews for the casual viewer is available via this site, and for research or teaching purposes the entire collection of video data is available via UCL’s CAVA repository website, from where it can be viewed or downloaded after registration.
