Subtitled ‘Audiovisual Archive of the Francoist Repression’, this resource is the result of a collaborative project between the University of California at San Diego and various Spanish civic associations and human rights organisations. The core of the site is its collection of audiovisual recordings featuring the testimonies of fighters in, witnesses to, and victims of the Spanish Civil War. The resource is an attempt to counter the long-lasting effects of the so-called ‘Pact of Silence’ and the 1977 Amnesty Law which forbade any legal proceedings against perpetrators of human rights violations during the conflict. This page gives a detailed account of the aims of the project, including an explanation of why oral testimony is so important and the reasoning behind the project’s methodology. Recordings are high quality mp4 format and feature English and Spanish summaries. The majority of the interviews, however, are in Spanish only, without subtitles.

The Albanian Film Archive is making its holdings freely available online thanks to an ongoing programme of preservation and digitisation. Users need to register in order to be able to view the online collections which include feature films, documentaries, animations and newsreels: largely consisting of the productions from one single state-owned entity, the New Albania studio, which started production in 1952 and was closed in 1992. The films provide a fascinating insight into a society which, under Enver Hoxha’s extreme brand of Stalinism, became one of the most closed in Europe. The site is available in English, as well as Albanian, with synopses and detailed credits available in both languages. More information about the background to the preservation programme is available at The Albanian Cinema Project.

This site presents the photographs, personal recollections and private films of German people, documenting the period between the last May Day rally in the GDR on 1st May 1989 and 2nd December 1990, when the first Bundestag elections of the newly united Germany took place. The result of a project developed by the Deutsche Kinemathek and the Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung, the aim of the project is to capture the personal responses of ordinary people to the historic events unfolding day by day. Searching can be narrowed according to theme, place, event as well as public figures, parties and organisations. A number of exhibitions provide structure to the resource, identifying significant events and themes - such as The Border Opens and grouping the relevant material together with contextual information, maps, dates, and place names. Some of the material is available under Creative Commons licences and the site is available in both German and English.

This fascinating microsite presents the only known audio recording of spy Guy Burgess, which was made by Burgess in 1951, just before he defected to the Soviet Union. In the recording, Burgess recalls his meeting with Winston Churchill in 1938. The tape was recovered from the FBI by two academics at City University: former head of ITN, Professor Stewart Purvis and media historian Jeff Hulbert. The site tells not only the story of how Purvis and Hulbert tracked down the recording but also includes a contextual essay on the significance of the tape, an events timeline, a full transcript of the tape’s contents, an FBI memo by J. Edgar Hoover, a video recording of the moment when Purvis and Hulbert opened the package from the FBI, and a Channel 4 News report by Michael Crick about the story.

The material is all freely available on the site. Researchers wishing to download any of the content are required to fill in a short request form.

Featuring contributions from ten national libraries and twenty film archives, there are 500,000 digital objects here, with resources from three big European projects, each dealing with different materials relating to World War One. The site collates material from Stories From the Public, Europeana Collections 1914 - 1918 and The European Film Gateway 1914 projects, as well as including additional items from New Zealand, Australia and America.

The British Library, who have contributed to this project, have created their own World War One educational resource, designed for secondary school and FE teachers and students. This includes 500 newly digitised resources from Europeana 1914-1918, accompanied by newly-commissioned articles by historians as well as teachers’ notes.
