The new EUscreen portal features content from over twenty archives and broadcasters across Europe, bringing together videos, stills, text and audio that provide an insight into the social, cultural, political and economic events that have shaped the 20th and 21st centuries. The content is freely available and offers researchers and academics the chance to study and compare the development of European television history across national borders. Much of the content on the new site is organised by series entry, allowing users to more easily trace not only the progress of historical events but also the changing modes of television production across the decades. A unified metadata schema unites Europe’s heterogenous audiovisual collections and provides a rich and detailed level of description which will enable researchers to contextualise the material and place it in its proper historical, social and technological environment. The new version of the portal supports html5 playout which allows the content to be viewed on mobile devices and tablets.

This website delivers thousands of free academic and educational multimedia content, including videos, animations and simulations. The site’s strengths are in Mathematics and the Sciences, but also cover History, Economics, English and Religion. The videos on the site are aggregated from other American educational collections (including the Khan Academy) and arranged by broad subject areas which are then subdivided into narrower concepts, and laid out on the page in a logical and easy to follow screen display. It is slightly frustrating that there is little contextual information associated with the videos, in the form of descriptions, contributors, and other useful metadata. It is also not possible to click through to view the video on its original home page. Nonetheless, worth visiting for the range and quality of material available.

This ambitious and engaging interactive guide to World War One mixes original news reports, maps, and footage to give a sense of the conflict as a global event. Ten historians, from ten different countries give their views on the war over the course of six chapters, comprising a chronological account of the war, from Origins to Aftermath. The flow of the documentary can be paused at any time to allow users to read newspaper articles from the time, view historians’ notes on specific aspects of the war, browse stills, or navigate via the interactive map to see information from around the world. The footage (which is from the Imperial War Museum as well as Getty, Corbis and Pathé) is integrated very effectively into the resource but there is no provenance for the individual clips, which is unfortunate. The resource plays on mobile devices and laptops, and can be seen in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Arabic or Hindi.

This site - also known as CroMe - presents interviews with Croatian citizens who have experienced violent situations in the time period 1941 - 1995: a timespan covering World War II, the Yugoslavia period and the Balkan conflicts of the 90s. There are hundreds of interviews, ‘with a particular emphasis on women and marginalised ethnic minorities, as well as on victims, particularly former inmates and family members of killed and missing persons’. Users can narow their search by word (in the text summary or subtitle) theme, place, region. The site is available in an English version but most of the videos are, of course, in Croatian. There is, however, a small selection which feature searchable English subtitles.
