This website has Flash animations of the phonetic sounds of English, German and Spanish. The result of a project by the University of Iowa, it is aimed at students of linguistics, phonetics and languages. Each consonant and vowel has an animated articulatory digram, showing a cross-section of how the human tongue, teeth and lips move when speaking, accompanied by audio of the sound itself. Playing alongside the animations are videos showing a person speaking a selection of words, in order to put the sounds in context. There is also an explanatory diagram of the articulatory anatomy, contributing to a well-designed, useful resource.

This online resource was created as part of the research project "The History of Federal German Anthropology from 1945 to 1990”. The core of the site is a collection of video interviews with leading German anthropologists. The interviews are in German, with English subtitles but the website itself is in English. The site’s other resources include a timeline which gives significant dates in German anthropology, and a glossary providing explanations of German anthropological terms.

Excellent information source on German film. Contains information (including availability information) on around 70,000 German films produced for the cinema since 1895. 7,000 of them are covered in-depth by synopses, reviews, photos or posters. There is a biographical guide to 110,000 names relevant for German film, and a Topics section on aspects of German cinema. The cross-referencing is good, and the site is clearly designed and well-illustrated. The site also includes trailers and clips as well as other audio-visual materials. There is a full English language version for every page.

The Federal Film Archives, Berlin, are digitising the Deutsche Wocheschau newsreel collection of German newsreels from 1949 and making them freely available over the internet. Over 6,000 stories have been issued so far, for lowband (56K) or broadband (250K) connections, using Windows Media Player.. The latter requires registration. Each clips comes with ‘storyboard’ and background information, and searching is by freetext, or by topic, personality, date or location. There are English language and German language versions of the site, but catalogue descriptions are in German only. The commentaries on the newsreels are, of course, in German.
