    Update

This website brings together news of the latest science research from universities in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and the USA. There are four main categories: Earth and the Environment; Health & Medicine; Science & Technology and Society & Culture. Most of the news consists of articles illustrated with still photographs but some moving imagery is used, as in this article which looks at how quickly can glaciers grow (and melt)?, using a study of the prehistoric activity of Baffin Island’s glaciers with a view to developing accurate models to predict how climate change in the future will affect glaciers and ice sheets.

The NSF is an American Federal Agency which funds research across a wide range of scientific areas, from astronomy to geology to zoology, with the exception of medical science. A particular aim is to fund cutting-edge research: projects and collaborations which may "seem like science fiction today" but tomorrow will be accepted as part of the fabric of everyday life. Their nanoscience page reflects this commitment to pushing back the frontiers of scientific research. The Multimedia Gallery features stills, podcasts, film and video across all fields of science and engineering, again, with an emphasis on current research and development, coupled with an awareness of the foundation’s educational mission.

The subjects covered include cognitive science, neuroscience, stem cell research, oncology, evolution and aging. The site has much that is interesting but of particular note are the proceedings of the Beyond Belief conference, a lively wide-ranging conference on science and religion featuring a large group of eminent scientists and philosophers, including Richard Dawkins, biologist and philosopher Francisco J. Ayala, planetary scientist Carolyn Porco and co-founder and Director of The Science Network Roger Bingham. TSN’s website features streaming videos and podcasts, which are also available for download.

A monthly seminar series, hosted by Stewart Brand, founder of The Long Now Foundation. The SALT seminars were started in 2003 with the aim of building "a compelling body of ideas about long-term thinking to help nudge civilization toward our goal of making long-term thinking automatic and common instead of difficult and rare". The website includes podcasts from a wide range of speakers, including geneticist Craig Ventner, technologist Ray Kurzweil and musician Brian Eno. A recurring concern is the use of environmental resources, but all speakers, from whatever discipline, are encouraged to frame their thoughts with reference to the deep past and the deep future: ie. to look 10,000 years ahead to combat the short-term thinking that the Long Now Foundation sees as endemic in modern culture. The entire archive of podcasts is available and new seminars are streamed live. Video of the seminars is available to members of the Long Now Foundation.
