The HHMI is a nonprofit medical research organisation, whose activities include promoting science education at all levels. The ‘Biointeractive’ section of the website includes interactive virtual laboratories, as well as video clips and animations organised under the headings stem cells, evolution, obesity, cancer, neuroscience genomics & chemical genetics, sex determination, biological clocks, infectious diseases, cardiovascular, immunology, DNA, and RNA. There is also a webcast archive of the ‘Holiday Lectures on Science’ programme and the lectures can be viewed (using Real Player) either with or without synchronised slides.
Streamed videos on biomedical topics, shorter clips of interviews with researchers on recent research; Also audio podcasts on specific areas of biomedical research.
Produced by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, this site offers an animated primer to 75 experiments that made modern genetics. Organised into three sections - Classical Genetics, Molecules of Genetics, and Genetic Organization and Control - each section contains basic animations (require Flash), an image gallery, audio and video interviews with scientists (using Quicktime), biographies, problems, and links to related sites.
The Human Genome Project (HGP) was an international research effort to sequence and map all of the genes - together known as the genome - of members of our species, Homo sapiens. It was completed in April 2003. This site offers access to a wealth of information on the history of the HGP, its progress, cast of characters and future, including An Interactive Timeline of the Human Genome. The original site of the project, Human Genome Project Information Archive (1990-2003) , can be accessed for historical purposes.
Several dozen Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs) made for staff and students at the University of Nottingham, lasting between 15 and 30 minutes, can be accessed here. Topics can be searched by a detailed list and include: Anatomy, Genetics, Maths, Midwifery, Pharmacology, Philosophy, Veterinary Science. Although the site states that it has not been updated since 2008 items are in fact still being added. Although spartan in appearance it remains an easy-to-use and fascinating resource.
